Wallace, 26, the only black driver in the famous racing series, was told about the rope noose by a member of his team in June, prompting a federal investigation. It was then determined that it had been there since October, while Wallace was only assigned the garage in recent weeks. The US President then took to Twitter to demand an apology from Wallace over the findings. He wrote: ‘Has [Bubba Wallace] apologised to all of those great NASCAR drivers and officials who came to his aid, stood by his side, and were willing to sacrifice everything for him, only to find out that the whole thing was just another hoax? That and flag decision has caused lowest ratings ever!’ His words were then challenged by journalists during a 20-minute press briefing on Monday, in which White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany struggled to explain their meaning. Donald Trump demanded Bubba Wallace apologise in a tweet (Picture: AP) Has @BubbaWallace apologized to all of those great NASCAR drivers & officials who came to his aid, stood by his side, & were willing to sacrifice everything for him, only to find out that the whole thing was just another HOAX? That & Flag decision has caused lowest ratings EVER! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 6, 2020 She repeatedly refused to expand further into what Trump wanted Wallace to apologise for. She said: ‘The president was noting the fact that – in aggregate – this notion that NASCAR men and women who have gone and who are being demeaned and called racist and being accused in some venues of committing a hate crime. Those allegations were just dead wrong.’ Ms McEnany also refused to denounce the Confederate flag after NASCAR decided to ban it from all races and events at Wallace’s urging. The controversial flag is often used as a symbol of slavery and white supremacy in the US. The press secretary went on: ‘The whole point of the tweet was to note the incident, the alleged hate crime that, in fact, was not a hate crime. ‘At the very end, the ban on the flag was mentioned the broader context of the fact that he rejects this notion that somehow NASCAR men and women who go to the sporting events are racist when in fact, as it turns out, what we saw with the FBI report and the alleged incident of hate crime, it was a complete indictment of the media’s rush to judgement once again, calling this a hate crime when the FBI completely dismissed that.’ The noose was found in Wallace’s garage by a member of his team (Picture: EPA) Bubba Wallace shared a message on social media after the White House defended Trump’s tweet She added: ‘Look the FBI, as I noted, concluded that this was not a hate crime, and [Trump] believes it go a long way if Bubba came out and acknowledged that as well.’ Ms McEnany also compared the finding of the noose to actor Jussie Smollett, who was accused of staging a racist attack against himself last year. She noted: ‘The president’s intent was to say no, most American people are good, hardworking people, and we should not have this rush to judgement, knee-jerk reaction, before the facts come out.’ Chris Wilder accuses Mikel Arteta of breaking the rules after Arsenal beat Sheffield Utd After the briefing Wallace took to his own Twitter account to tell his followers they should always deal with ‘the hate being thrown at you with love’. He said: ‘Your words and actions will always be held to a higher standard than others. You have to be prepared for that. You don’t learn these things in school. You learn them from trials and tribulations, the ups and doss this crazy world provides. ‘You will always have people testing you. Seeing if they can knock you off your pedestal. I encourage you to keep your head held high and walk proudly on the path you have chosen. Never let anybody tell you can’t do something! God put us all here for a reason. Find that reason and be proud of it and work your tails off every day towards it! ‘All the haters are doing is elevating your voice and platform to much greater heights! Last thing, always deal with the hate being thrown at you with love! Love over hate every day. Love should come naturally as people are taught to hate.’ His words were also supported by NASCAR, who commended his ‘courage and leadership’ in a statement. They said: ‘NASCAR continues to stand tall with Bubba, our competitors and everyone who makes our sport welcoming and inclusive for all racing fans.’ Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
