Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein launched a blistering attack on President Trump (Picture: GMB/AP) One of the most respected journalists in history has said Donald Trump is willing to see the US ‘go up in flames’ if it helps him stay in the White House. Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein said the US President understands that there has been a ‘cold civil war’ in America and is now exploiting it by throwing ‘fuel on the fire’, ahead of November’s election against Joe Biden. In a blistering attack during Good Morning Britain earlier, he also claimed that President Trump is more ‘ignorant of history’ than any of his predecessors. Mr Bernstein said: ‘His misstatements of facts and lies are well known and actually define both him and his presidency. ‘But what we are dealing with here is a President of the United States who… is regarded by those who served closest with him in national security areas as unfit to be President of the United States.’ Mr Bernstein, who was played by Dustin Hoffman in the film All the President’s Men, uncovered the Watergate scandal with fellow Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward, eventually leading to the resignation of then President Richard Nixon. Now widely considered one of the great investigative reporters, Mr Bernstein recently revealed a series of extraordinary phone calls between Mr Trump and various foreign leaders. In a significant leak of private conversations, the veteran journalist reported on how Mr Trump ‘bullied’ former British Prime Minister Theresa May and that officials came to consider Mr Trump a threat to national security. In this morning’s interview, Mr Bernstein added: ‘Donald Trump has commanded the allegiance of perhaps 40% of our electorate through his presidency, despite all the outrages, despite the acts of demonstrable incompetence, despite the fact that he is a racist in terms of both his words and his acts. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T55S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/07\/07\/08\/30475512-0-image-a-51_1594105511953.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-07-07T08:05:38+0100”,“description”:“Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein accuses President Donald Trump of being ‘more ignorant of history than any American President there has ever been’.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/07\/07\/6634256801342733340\/480x270_MP4_6634256801342733340.mp4”,“height”:270,“width”:480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video ‘This is an extraordinary situation.’ Mr Bernstein has long been seen as a critic of the US president, who previously labelled him a ‘degenerate fool’. But the veteran journalist said the ‘cold civil war’ had been going on in America for ’25, 30 years’, adding: ‘He (Mr Trump) has now been willing to bring that cold civil war to the point of ignition in terms of his provocations. Mr Bernstein accused the President of throwing fuel on the fire ‘in such a way to gain re-election that he is willing to see this country, to some extent, go up in flames on the streets if he thinks that it would help his re-election.’ {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T57S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/07\/07\/07\/30473996-0-image-m-36_1594101836054.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-07-07T07:03:19+0100”,“description”:“Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein accuses President Donald Trump of being 'willing to see the US go up in flames’ if it would help him keep the White House.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/07\/07\/3947682737238489861\/480x270_MP4_3947682737238489861.mp4”,“height”:270,“width”:480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Mr Bernstein’s former paper, the Washington Post, keeps a running count of the number of times it says Mr Trump has made false or misleading claims.
