The rising Democrat star claims the affair allegations come from her ‘abusive’ husband (Picture: Katie Hill) A rising star in US politics announced her resignation over an alleged affair with an aide that saw explicit photos surface online. Democrat Katie Hill, 32, said the private photos of her with a campaign staffer had been ‘weaponised’ by her husband and political operatives. She had been accused of having an affair with a male aide in her congressional office, which is forbidden under House of Representatives rules. A House ethics probe was launched after the claims surfaced on a conservative blog, which also reported claims she had a three-way romance with a female campaign staff member and her husband. It published explicit photos of the politician. Ms Hill, one of few openly bisexual women in Congress, has denied having the inappropriate relationship and says the claims are part of a ‘smear’ campaign waged by an abusive husband. She says her husband, whom she is in the process of divorcing, and ‘hateful political operatives’ have ‘weaponised’ the photos against her. Katie Hill shot into the spotlight after winning her seat in 2018 (Picture: EPA) She wrote in a statement on Sunday: ‘It is with a broken heart that today I announce my resignation from Congress. ‘Having private photos of personal moments weaponized against me has been an appalling invasion of my privacy. ‘It’s also illegal, and we are currently pursuing all of our available legal options.’ ‘However, I know that as long as I am in Congress, we’ll live fearful of what might come next and how much it will hurt.’ Her resignation will take effect on Friday. Ms Hill wrote to supporters shortly before the congressional probe was launched acknowledging a different ‘inappropriate relationship’ with a female 2018 campaign staff member. Ms Hill has vowed to fight ‘exploitation’ against women after stepping down (Picture: Katie Hill) But this relationship fell outside House rules, having taken place before she was elected. She says the relationship began in the final ‘tumultuous’ years of her marriage to Kenny Heslep, who she married in 2010 and described as ‘my best friend and the love of my life’ as recently as two years ago. In the letter to supporters, she said: ‘I know that even a consensual relationship with a subordinate is inappropriate, but I still allowed it to happen despite my better judgment. For that I apologise.’ She added in Sunday’s statement: ‘Now, my fight is going to be to defeat this type of exploitation that so many women are victims to and which will keep countless women and girls from running for office or entering public light.’ The Democrat rose to the spotlight after winning the last Republican-held House seat in Los Angeles County, part of a wave of polls in 2018 that saw Donald Trump’s party driven out of Southern California. Her campaign had raised $2.2 million (£1.7 million) this year alone. She is also vice-chair of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, which has been probing President Trump’s finances.
