New York’s Attorney General is set to make a ‘major national announcement’ on Thursday after a prosecutor obtained Trump’s financial records (Picture: AP) New York’s Attorney General says she will deliver a ‘major national announcement’ on Thursday after prosecutors got hold of Donald Trump’s financial records. The Empire State’s most senior official lawyer Letitia James teased the announcement on Wednesday night. She spoke as it was revealed Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R Vance has been handed over private Trump papers from Deutsche Bank – one of the president’s key lenders. Attorney General James has not explicitly confirmed whether or not the announcement she will be making is related to the president himself. She sent a subpoena (legal demand) for the same documents from Deutsche Bank that District Attorney Vance has since been granted, although it is unclear whether James herself has obtained them too. Prosecutors may investigate whether Trump exaggerated the value of his assets, including Trump Tower, pictured, to obtain bank loans, although the president and his family have denied wrongdoing (Picture: Getty) Vance said his request for the Deutsche Bank paperwork could form part of a potential investigation into ‘possibly extensive and protracted criminal conduct at the Trump organization.’ The president and his family have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and branded the probe a ‘fishing expedition’ to try and damage his credibility among voters. Vance’s probe may focus on whether property developer and reality star turned politician Trump overestimated the value of his assets when seeking loans from Deutsche Bank, meaning he was given larger loans than he was entitled to. But The New York Times reported that bosses at the bank factored in possible exaggeration when lending to Trump. Estimates of the value of Trump’s assets are subjective could also vary widely, making it harder to pin an allegation of wrongdoing against the president and his family. Last month, US Supreme Court justices said Prosecutor Vance was entitled to investigate Trump’s financial affairs, with the case now headed back to a lower court for further legal wrangling. Details of Trump’s finances – and any alleged wrongdoing – are unlikely to emerge before the presidential election on November 3. Trump is lagging behind Joe Biden in polls over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, and ongoing racial equality protests across the US. But Trump and his supporters believe the president’s chances of re-election will be substantially bolstered if the economy makes a sharp recovery during the third quarter of the year – spanning between July 1 and September 30. They are also confident the president will perform much better than Biden during live debates, with his rival famously prone to on-air blunders and gaffes.
