MarQuies Demone Patterson, 31, had been celebrating Biden’s win around Cal Anderson Park when he was shot while leaving the area around 1am, his mum Que Vasser said. She described how his friends had heard gunfire and turned to see him falling down. Emergency services rushed him to the city’s Harborview Medical Center, but he later died from his injuries. Ms Patterson told The Seattle Times her son had just wanted ‘go out and show his respect for the new president and the vice president’. He had two children aged nine and 10. She added: ‘He was a hardworking, caring, loving, respectable young man. He was just trying to make a life for his children.’ No arrests have yet been made in connection with the shooting. A handgun was reportedly found close to the scene and taken to police. Footage from the scene showed police telling people to move out the area and blocking off the roads with yellow tape. The incident was close to the so-called Capital Hill Organised Protest (CHOP) zone, which was declared autonomous by activists during Black Lives Matter protests over the summer. The zone became police-free after officers in the area abandoned their precinct, but was later cleared of its occupants in July. On Saturday, people gathered in the area to celebrate Biden winning the presidential race against Donald Trump. Seattle Police said in a statement: ‘Homicide detectives are investigating following the fatal shooting of a 31-year-old man early Sunday morning at 10th Avenue East and East Pike Street. Upon arrival, officers located the male victim and began life-saving measures until the Seattle Fire Department took over primary care.’ The shooting comes just hours after a Trump supporter was challenged by a journalist for turning up at a demonstration with a rifle in Atlanta, Georgia. Sky News journalist Alex Crawford could be seen asking the man, who was also wearing a bullet proof vest, why he had dressed like that to protest the election. The man replied: ‘For security’. He then alleged that Biden supporters had also come out heavily armed for the event, before he got into a lift with other Trump supporters holding weapons.
