Who is predicted to come out on top? (Picture: SIPA/AP) The news might still be heavily focused on coronavirus this side of the pond, but over in the United States, they are gearing up for a monumental election. In November 2020, Donald Trump could be re-elected for four more years as President, or he might be voted out in favour of the Democratic nominee and ex-Vice President Joe Biden. As the election looms closer, who is currently leading the polls? Trump V Biden: who is winning in the polls? A poll from CNN has revealed that the Joe Biden and Kamala Harris Democratic ticket is still leading President Trump and his VP Mike Pence, but that the gap between the two has closed. The study was conducted for CNN via telephone by SSRS, an independent research company, and interviews were conducted from August 12-15 among a sample of 1,108 respondents. The study asked, were the election to be held today, who would respondents be most likely to vote for. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T1M42S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/08\/18\/14\/32091130-0-image-a-43_1597758649627.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-08-18T14:51:48+0100”,“description”:“Donald Trump says Melania Obama was over her head in response to her DNC speech.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/08\/18\/2428543213643413691\/640x360_MP4_2428543213643413691.mp4”,“height”:360,“width”:640} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The results showed that 50% chose Biden, Harris and the Democrats, while 46% chose Trump, Pence and the Republicans. Meanwhile, 1% of respondents chose ‘Other’, 2% chose Neither and 2% chose ‘No Opinion.’ The gap has narrowed since the last time CNN conducted this same poll. When asked the same questions between June 2-5, 55% chose Biden, Harris, and the Democrats and 41% chose Trump and the Republicans. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T1M4S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/08\/13\/07\/31896286-0-image-a-7_1597301079752.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-08-13T07:44:35+0100”,“description”:“‘Whining is what Donald Trump does best’: Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said it was 'no surprise’ that President Trump attacked his vice-presidential pick Kamala Harris and accused Trump of having a problem with 'strong women’.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/08\/13\/1352846858983289787\/640x360_MP4_1352846858983289787.mp4”,“height”:360,“width”:640} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video What do other polls say? A similar pattern emerges from other sources, including Real Clear Politics and the Associated Press. The BBC reports that these sources have Biden winning in more ‘battleground states.’ In the electoral college system used in the Presidential election, every state is given a number of electoral college votes based on its population size. The larger states have more electoral college votes, meaning if a candidate can win more of them, they can win the Presidency even if they lose the popular vote across all of the country – as happened in the 2016 election. Now that Biden officially declared Kamala Harris as his VP, the battle is on between Biden/Harris and Trump/Pence (Picture: Joe Biden) Many of these states – sometimes known as ‘swing states’ – have been known to be unpredictable and not always go the way expected, meaning candidates will often campaign harder and focus more energy on winning these. Of these battleground states, Biden, according to Real Clear Politics, is polling ahead in 10 out of 14. These include: Arizona Florida Nevada New Hampshire Pennsylvania Trump is polling ahead in battleground states including Georgia, Iowa and Texas. However, with the election on November 3 still a few months off, things can change on a dime. Trump proved he can pull off a shocking win in 2016, when he wiped states predicted to go to Hillary Clinton including Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
