Trump supporters were left angry after Michelle Obama called him the ‘wrong president for our country’ (Picture: Reuters/PA) Donald Trump supporters have attacked Michelle Obama by digging up an old video of her calling convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein ‘a wonderful human being’. The Republican leader’s fans were left disgruntled when the former First Lady endorsed Joe Biden and declared Trump the ‘wrong president for our country’ during a virtual address to the Democratic National Convention this week. Seeking revenge, they began retweeting a 2013 speech in which she named the disgraced former film producer ‘a good friend’. The speech was made four years before more than 80 women came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against Weinstein and seven years before he was found guilty of criminal sexual act in the first degree and rape in the third degree. Speaking at a Careers in Film Symposium at the White House, Mrs Obama said: ‘I want to start by thanking Harvey Weinstein for organising this amazing day. ‘This is possible because of Harvey. He is a wonderul human being, a good friend and just a powerhouse. ‘The fact that he and his team took the time to make this happen for all of you should say something – not about me or about this place, but about you. Everybody – we are here because of you.’ Stars including Whoopi Goldberg, Naomie Harris, Ryan Coogler, David Frankel and Blake Lively also attended the event, which provided high school students with workshops on the film industry. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T35S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/08\/19\/10\/32127584-0-image-a-40_1597830880727.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-08-19T10:52:02+0100”,“description”:“A video of Michelle Obama praising Harvey Weinstein has been resurfaced by Trump fans, after the former First Lady endorsed Joe Biden for presidency.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/08\/19\/4379787660110284786\/480x270_MP4_4379787660110284786.mp4”,“height”:270,“width”:480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The video was tweeted out by prominent Trump supporters, including actor James Woods who wrote: ‘Beautiful endorsement tonight. She’s a great judge of character, so please be kind. No trolling. Oh, wait…’ The Obama family released a statement expressing their horror at the sexual abuse allegations made against Weinstein in 2017. Barack Obama said: ‘Michelle and I have been disgusted by the recent reports about Harvey Weinstein,’ ‘Any man who demeans and degrades women in such fashion needs to be condemned and held accountable, regardless of wealth or status. ‘We should celebrate the courage of women who have come forward to tell these painful stories. ‘And we all need to build a culture – including by empowering our girls and teaching our boys decency and respect – so we can make such behavior less prevalent in the future.’ Michelle Obama said Trump is ‘clearly in over his head’ (Picture: AP) The video of the former First Lady’s speech has been thrust into the spotlight after she claimed Trump ‘has had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job, but he is clearly in over his head’. The former lawyer said her strategy had always been to ‘go high’ when the opposition ‘go low’, but insisted this did not mean ‘putting on a smile and saying nice things when confronted by viciousness and cruelty’. She said: ‘If you take one thing from my words tonight, it is this: if you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me, they can; and they will if we don’t make a change in this election. If we have any hope of ending this chaos, we have got to vote for Joe Biden like our lives depend on it.’ Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
