Donald Trump has insisted the US is dealing better with coronavirus than ‘most other countries’ – but declined to name them (Pictures: AP) Donald Trump has claimed the United States is handling its surging coronavirus outbreak better than ‘most other countries’ – but refused to name them. The President of the United States tweeted Tuesday: ‘You will never hear this on the Fake News concerning the China Virus, but by comparison to most other countries, who are suffering greatly, we are doing very well – and we have done things that few other countries could have done!’ Trump spoke despite the US being by-far the worst-affected country on Earth, with close to 3.9million coronavirus infections and more than 140,000 deaths. States with Trump-supporting governors who sought to play down the severity of the virus – including Florida, Texas, and Georgia, have all seen huge surges in recent weeks. California – governed by Democrat Gavin Newsom – has also seen its own surge, with no apparent peak to infections in sight. Trump boasted about the US response to coronavirus despite his country being way ahead of the next worst-affected nation Brazil, which has seen 2.1million cases and more than 80,000 deaths. India is in third place, with 1.1million infections, with Russia’s 783,000 cases placing it fourth. China – where the virus began – is widely believed to have lied about the number of cases it saw, with its official 83,000 tally disputed. But its totalitarian communist government was able to stamp out the worst of the outbreak relatively quickly with a series of draconian lockdowns which saw residents welded into their apartment buildings. And while no democratic country could consider such measures, Trump was widely condemned for playing down the severity of the virus, claiming it would go away by itself while only causing minimum harm to the United States and calling on states to reopen as quickly as possible. States which ignored his urging – including one-time epicenter New York – have seen a sharp drop in coronavirus diagnoses and deaths as a result of their own measures. The president plans to restart his controversial daily coronavirus briefings on Tuesday evening. The rambling, combative question and answer sessions took place every day at the start of the crisis, but were halted. after the president was condemned for suggesting an injection of disinfectant as a possible coronavirus treatment. The president is currently polling poorly against election rival Joe Biden, and is widely-believed to be restarting the Covid-19 briefings as a way of reaching his base, after conceding large, crowded rallies are no longer safe. In recent weeks, Trump has also declared that the United States’ coronavirus numbers would look much better if states scaled back on testing, masking the true size of the outbreak.
