The President of the United States tweeted Tuesday: ‘Looking forward to live sports, but any time I witness a player kneeling during the National Anthem, a sign of great disrespect for our Country and our Flag, the game is over for me!’ But Trump’s hypocrisy was quickly flagged by comedians The Good Liars, who shared a clip of the president pretending to conduct the Star-Spangled Banner at a Super Bowl Party held at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida in February. The president was seen swinging from side to side and gesticulating wildly during the song he regularly venerates – while wife Melania stood next to him with her hand solemnly clamped to her chest. Trump could be seen twirling his hands in the air, and looking around for approval during his slapstick performance. The gesture was first made by former San Francisco 49’ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2016, with President Trump calling on players who followed his example to be ‘fired’ by their bosses. In 2018, the president tweeted: ‘Wow, NFL first game ratings are way down over an already really bad last year comparison. ‘Viewership declined 13%, the lowest in over a decade. If the players stood proudly for our Flag and Anthem, and it is all shown on broadcast, maybe ratings could come back? The black security guard was killed by white Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on his neck for eight minutes 46 seconds. Chauvin has since been charged with Floyd’ murder, which triggered ongoing protests across the United States.
