Facebook has silenced Team Trump’s anti-Antifa ads. (Picture: Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images) Facebook has taken down ads for President Donald Trump which called for Antifa – an umbrella term for a political protest movement founded on militant opposition to fascism and extreme right-wing ideology – to be labelled a terrorist group. The ads – organised by the verified Team Trump page – read: ‘Dangerous MOBS of far-left groups are running through our streets and causing absolute mayhem. They are DESTROYING our cities and rioting – it’s absolute madness… We’re calling on YOU to make a public statement and add your name to stand with President Trump against ANTIFA. ‘Please add your name IMMEDIATELY to stand with your President and his decision to declare ANTIFA a Terrorist Organization’ The post finishes with a prominent image of an upside down red triangle – which is the cause of the ads being pulled. What is the meaning of the symbol? What does the upside down triangle mean? Inverted triangles were used by the Nazis to classify prisoners during the Second World War. The upside down triangles were used as identifying badges, and were sewn into the uniforms of concentration camp prisoners. There were numerous colours of triangle worn, so that Nazi officers could easily know what ‘crime’ a prisoner was allegedly guilty of committing. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum reports that, for example, a pink triangle would be sewn into the uniforms of homosexual prisoners. Criminals were required to have a green triangle and political prisoners, including Communists, Social Democrats, and trade unionists, were forced to wear a red triangle. Does Antifa use a red triangle? In a statement, AP News reports that Trump campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh said the inverted red triangle was a symbol used by Antifa, therefore it was used in an ad about Antifa. This is an emoji.🔻 It’s also a symbol widely used by Antifa. It was used in an ad about Antifa. It is not in the ADL’s Hate Symbols Database. pic.twitter.com/V4fK8QWHKD — Trump War Room – Text TRUMP to 88022 & get the APP (@TrumpWarRoom) June 18, 2020 He said the symbol is not in the Anti-Defamation League’s database of symbols of hate. This narrative has been repeated online by Trump supporters. However, a Google Search of Antifa symbols only brings up connections to the upside down red triangle in relation to this latest story. Why did Facebook take down the Trump ads? In a statement to MediaMatters released on Thursday 18 June, a rep for Facebook said the ads violated ‘our policy against organized hate.’ A Facebook executive who testified at a House Intelligence Committee hearing on Thursday is reported by Associated Press News as saying the company does not permit symbols of hateful ideology ‘unless they’re put up with context or condemnation.’ {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T46S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/06\/16\/17\/29680188-0-image-a-1_1592326433176.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-06-16T17:52:22+0100”,“description”:“Trump says chokeholds will be banned unless an officers life is at risk as he signs new executive order.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/06\/16\/1766204698492714270\/480x270_MP4_1766204698492714270.mp4”,“height”:270,“width”:480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video ‘In a situation where we don’t see either of those, we don’t allow it on the platform and we remove it. That’s what we saw in this case with this ad, and anywhere that that symbol is used, we would take the same action,’ said Nathaniel Gleicher, the company’s head of security policy. It has been reported by AP News that the Trump campaign spent more than $10,000 (around £8,045) on the ads, which started appearing on Wednesday 17 June and targeted men and women of all ages across the United States, particularly focusing on Texas, California and Florida.
