The original CNN story, which is from 2019, reported on a friendship between two toddlers. The president shared a doctored version of the clip showing a black child running from a white child with a fake CNN graphic that reads ‘Terrified todler runs from racist baby’, with toddler spelt incorrectly. The clip then shows the original footage, which was of the two children embracing, and accuses the media of spreading misinformation. The video ends with a blacked out screen that shows the message: ‘America is not the problem. Fake news is. If you see something, say something. ‘Only you can prevent fake news dumpster fires.’ Here’s how CNN actually covered this video https://t.co/tzW7YbygBw — Adrian D. Garcia (@adriandgarcia) June 19, 2020 Twitter added a label to the video, which was tweeted out by Trump late on Thursday evening, marking it as manipulated. The warning was linked to a web page outlining Twitter policies as they relate to selectively edited clips. A CNN spokesperson, addressing Trump, said: ‘CNN did cover this story – but exactly as it happened. ‘Just as CNN has reported your positions on race (and your poll numbers). ‘We’ll continue working with facts and invite you to do the same, rather than tweeting fake videos that exploit innocent children. Be better.’ The doctored video contained a fake CNN graphic with a spelling mistake (Picture: @realDonaldTrump / Twitter) CNN covered the story exactly as it happened, which was the two boys running towards each other and embracing (Picture: @realDonaldTrump / Twitter) Michael D Cisneros, the father of one of the children that appeared in the video, also expressed outrage on social media, accusing the president of turning a ‘loving, beautiful video’ into something that can ‘further his hate agenda’. The Twitter warning on Trump’s tweet came just hours after Facebook banned adverts for the president’s re-election campaign which they said featured a symbol used by the Nazis. Trump has been lashing out at social media companies in recent weeks and last month signed an executive order designed to narrow protections over the content posted on their platforms. Twitter has largely taken a hands off approach to Trump’s controversial tweets but had stepped up action amid pressure to do more to combat fake news. In May it added a label that fact-checked misinformation amplified by the US president about electoral fraud. It also added a note cautioning that a post, which threatened military action against George Floyd protesters, glorified violence. A Twitter spokesperson told CNN they labelled Trump’s latest tweet ‘per our synthetic and manipulated media policy to give people more context’.
