Desmond Swayne has been criticised for his ‘dismissive and disgraceful’ comments about George Floyd protesters A Tory MP has refused to condemn Donald Trump for authorising violence against black lives matter protesters, saying ‘arsonists and looters have it coming’. Desmond Swayne, who represents New Forest West, was asked to show support to the black members of his community by helping to instigate the suspension of UK sales of teargas, riot shields and rubber bullets to the US. A constituent asked him to criticise Trump’s use of force against his own citizens after the president threatened to deploy troops to quell ongoing and largely peaceful race protests sparked by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police brutality. However, responding to the email, Swayne wrote: ‘Thanks. Sorry to disagree. Arsonists and looters have it coming.’ Desmond Swayne refused to condem Donald Trump’s actions Several other constituents said they received the same response, branding it ‘disgusting’ and ‘dismissive’. In one he said: ‘Racism is a cancer, and I’m glad that the perpetrator is on a murder charge. ‘Nevertheless, looters arsonists and rioters have it coming.’ In another he said: ‘Whist I was horrified by the initial incident which has resulted in a police officer being charged with murder…I am sorry to disagree with you, rioters, arsonists and looters have it coming’. Disgusted by @DesmondSwayne ‘s response to my letter, asking if he will condemn Trump & how he will address racial bias in this pandemic. He is condoning Trump’s violence & he didn’t even address the 2nd paragraph of my email. Please share. #BlackLivesMatter #BLM pic.twitter.com/pXekcuNqX6 — mle x (@amthxst) June 2, 2020 Several Labour MPs have criticised Swayne over the remarks. Jess Phillips said he showed a ‘complete lack of thought or care’. Florence Eshalomi tweeted: ‘Wow – what a response to a legitimate question from a constituent. ‘I’m sorry your MP doesn’t seem to be able to show solidarity towards condemning racism and injustice with the local and national black community.’ {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T46S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/06\/03\/13\/29169498-0-image-a-39_1591187175625.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-06-03T13:24:56+0100”,“description”:“People gather in London’s Hyde Park to show solidarity with US protesters.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/06\/03\/589074776143084604\/480x270_MP4_589074776143084604.mp4”,“height”:270,“width”:480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T3M56S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/06\/03\/08\/29161106-0-image-a-4_1591170250631.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-06-03T08:43:39+0100”,“description”:“‘As a black woman, my people created this country,’ said 30-year-old Alyssa Smith. The death of Floyd, 46, in Minneapolis, has sparked the biggest uprising against racism and police brutality in the USA since the 1960s and provoked demonstrations across the world. Floyd, who had a six-year-old daughter, died last week after white police officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into his neck for eight minutes, even after he stopped moving and pleading for air. Floyd was unarmed and was in handcuffs as he gasped ‘I can’t breath’. Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder, but the three other officers involved in his arrest have not. The vast majority of rallies sparked by the death of Floyd have been peaceful but shocking videos have shown police responding with violence, firing tear gas and pepper bullets to try to disperse crowds. George Floyd’s death has sparked black lives matter protests across the globe, including London’s Hyde Park (Picture: Getty) Dozens of cities in the US imposed curfews, but many people ignored them, leading to stand-offs and clashes between police and protests. The police response has seen security forces ramming crowds with cars and horses, deploying gas and baton rounds against peaceful demonstrators, and arresting and shooting at domestic and international journalists covering events. People are being encouraged to write to their MPs to ask them to condemn the violence, support black communities and say what they have done to combat racism in the UK as part of practical ways they can help. Pressure is mounting on Boris Johnson to suspend the export of British arms and riot gear to the US, after opposition parties backed a call from human rights groups to intervene. It comes as Stand Up to Racism (SUTR) asks people to ‘Take the Knee for George Floyd’ at 6pm tonight as part of a socially distanced day of action against racism, including a protest in Hyde Park today.
