Spike Lee has shared his thoughts on Donald Trump Spike Lee has called out Donald Trump and labelled him a ‘gangster’ in response to the current protests in the US following the death of George Floyd. Floyd, a 46-year-old father, died after a police officer was filmed kneeling on his neck, sparking Black Lives Matter protests around the globe. Now filmmaker Lee has shared his thoughts, saying people in the US are angry because they ‘live every day in this world where the system is not set up for you to win’. The Do the Right Thing director, who has long been a vocal opponent of Mr Trump, told the BBC: ‘He’s a gangster, he’s trying to be a dictator.’ It followed threats from the leader to send in the military to quell growing civil unrest across the US – with many criticising him for ‘hiding’ in a bunker under the White House. Speaking on the President following his bizarre photo op in which a priest and peaceful Black Lives Matter protesters were tear gassed so he could walk to a damaged church near the White House and hold up a Bible, Lee said he watched the spectacle in disbelief. Mr Trump held a Bible in the photo op (Picture: AP) He said: ‘I was watching this last night with my family and we were all screaming in disbelief that this thing was staged. ‘This show of force – gassing, beating innocent, peaceful bystanders so you could clear the street so you could take a walk to the church. It was ridiculous.’ The Oscar-winner added: ‘The Bible did not look comfortable in his hand, and he didn’t look comfortable holding the Bible either. ‘I have never seen something like that before in my life, particularly with a world leader.’ Lee has long been a critic of the President (PIcture: AFP) Lee, whose promoting his latest film Da 5 Bloods, also spoke on the killing of black people and police walking free, as he went on: ‘Black and brown people are angry at the disparity between the haves and have-nots – education, drinking dirty water, racism. ‘People are angry for a reason. It’s not like you’re just born angry. You’re angry because you live every day in this world where the system is not set up for you to win.’ Earlier this week Lee dropped a powerful short film on his Twitter page featuring the deaths of George Floyd, as well as Eric Garner who, in 2014, was arrested by a white police officer who used a chokehold to restrain him. He later died in hospital.
