Donald Trump spent nearly an hour in the bunker — which is designed for use in emergencies like terror attacks — as protests continued to rock the country over the death of George Floyd, a black man who died while being arrested by a white policeman. Viral footage showing the officer kneeling on Mr Floyd’s neck for eight minutes has caused outrage across the globe. The Presidential Emergency Operations Center, used on 9/11, was called into action as demonstrations in Washington turned violence as one of the highest alerts since the September 11 attacks in 2001 came into force. A Republican ‘close to the White House who was not authorised to publicly discuss it and spoke on condition of anonymity’ told Associated Press about the incident, as protests spiralled across the United States. The source said Mr Trump was rushed to the bunker on Friday by Secret Service agents as hundreds of people protesting the death of George Floyd gathered outside the executive mansion, some of them throwing rocks and tugging at police barricades. The bunker is located beneath the East Wing of the White House, where operations can continue in an emergency. It was used during the terror attacks in 9/11, when various members of the Government were placed in the bunker, while President George Bush was initially in Florida. Not much is known about the bunker, but pictures from 2001, show a dark room, presumably built to withstand serious impact, lined with a wooden table and chairs. The images show dated telephones in the room, but it is unclear how much has changed in 19 years. The abrupt decision by the agents underscored the rattled mood inside the White House, where the chants from protesters in Lafayette Park could be heard all weekend and Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers struggled to contain the crowds. The account has been confirmed by an administration official who also spoke on condition of anonymity, but White House spokesman Judd Deere said: ‘The White House does not comment on security protocols and decisions.’ The president and his family have been shaken by the size and venom of the crowds, according to the source. Mr Trump traveled to Florida on Saturday to view the first manned space launch from the US in nearly a decade. He returned to a White House under virtual siege, with protesters – some violent – gathered just a few hundred yards away through much of the night.
