It comes after US president Donald Trump suggested on Thursday scientists should investigate to see if they could inject the human body with disinfectants to kill Covid-19. Health and hygiene company Reckitt Benckiser Group released a statement titled ‘improper use of disinfectants’ this morning, which said ‘under no circumstance’ should its products be put inside the human body. The full press release read: ‘Due to recent speculation and social media activity, RB (the makers of Lysol and Dettol) has been asked whether internal administration of disinfectants may be appropriate for investigation or use as a treatment for coronavirus. Stay safe guys!’ While it’s nice to be trending on Twitter, we would like to remind you all that Zoflora is NOT for human consumption in any way, despite what certain world leaders may be suggesting 👀 Stay safe guys! pic.twitter.com/PnstC2QH2P — Zoflora (@LoveZoflora) April 24, 2020 The statements were released after Donald Trump caused alarm after offering the dangerous and unscientific theories at a White House briefing on Thursday. It started when a top government official said studies showed a combination of UV light and warmer temperatures could kill Covid-19 particles within minutes. President Trump said: ‘Supposing we hit the body with a tremendous, whether it’s ultraviolet, or just very powerful light? And I think you said, that hasn’t been checked out, but you’re going to test it.’ The makers of disinfectants have warned against putting them in the human body ‘under any circumstance’ (Picture: Reuters) The president, who has no scientific qualifications, continued: ‘And then I said supposing you brought the light inside the body which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. And I think you said you’re going to test that too. ‘And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks out in a minute, one minute, and is there a way we can do something like that? By injection inside, or almost a cleaning. ‘As you see, it gets in the lungs, and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it would be interesting to check that.’ He has since been condemned over worries people will follow his advice and potentially cause themselves serious harm, as disinfectant is poisonous and not fit for human consumption in any form. Government home testing kits run out within minutes of service opening Tributes pour in for ‘respected’ nurse and 'dedicated’ carer who died of coronavirus Homeland security science and technology directorate boss, William Bryan, said bleach and concentrated alcohol solutions can both kill coronavirus, but both liquids are only intended to remove Covid-19 from surfaces, and are highly dangerous to ingest. White House coronavirus coordinator Dr Deborah Birx also tried to highlight issues with President Trump’s theory, by saying that exposure to sunlight could help people suffering from fever, but that techniques to get UV light under the skin have not yet been invented. Good Morning Britain’s Dr Hilary Jones slammed President Trump’s ideas as ‘crazy’, saying on the programme this morning: ‘Of course don’t do that at home. I mean, it’s a poison. ‘And then ultraviolet light? This is because he thinks the sun emanates from an orifice in his body, obviously. Dr Hilary Jones reacts with shock to Donald Trump’s bizarre coronavirus theory about disinfectants on Good Morning Britain (Picture: ITV) ‘It’s just ridiculous. It would be funny if it weren’t quite so serious.’ A number of celebrities also took to Twitter to denounce the President’s ‘insane’ comments, including Piers Morgan, Jeremy Vine and Julia Bradbury. The Good Morning Britain host tweeted: ‘This is not just insane, it’s also incredibly dangerous. ‘If Americans now die from injecting themselves with disinfectant, their deaths will be solely on President @realDonaldTrump. He needs to stop airing these absurd & reckless theories – NOW.’ This is not just insane, it’s also incredibly dangerous.
