Iowa is the first contest in the 2020 American presidential nominating process. (Picture:Joe Raedle/Getty Images) Iowa has been first in the US primary calendar since 1972 and a win in the caucus here is a good sign for any candidate that they may be victorious later on in the Presidential race for the White House. The tradition of Iowa going first and being a key vote dates back to when Jimmy Carter was running for President. He won the caucus in Iowa in 1976 and then went on to win the overall US election in 1976. A caucus, essentially a meeting where party members vote on their desired candidate, is much less common now than 50 years ago in America, but the vote for the new Democratic candidate here this week has still captured the world’s attention. Where is Iowa? Iowa is a US state in the American Midwest which shares borders with the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota. A state who eastern and western borders are defined by the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, Iowa has a population of just over three million people. Downtown in Des Moines, the state capital of Iowa. The attention of the Iowa caucus has been almost entirely focused on who won the race to pick a Democratic Party candidate, because the Republican candidate will almost certainly be current US President Donald Trump once again. Former US Vice-President Joe Biden, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Pete Buttigieg and Senator Elizabeth Warren are just a few of the lead contenders in the race to become Democratic Party leader. Sorry, this video isn’t available any more. The voting results of the Iowa caucus are currently delayed, with the Democratic party citing a ‘reporting issue’ as the reason behind the lack of results so far. Although the caucuses took place on Monday night in America, the results are now due to be released as some stage today, Tuesday 4 February. Iowa Democratic Party spokeswoman Mandy McClure said of the delay: ‘The underlying data and paper trail is sound and will simply take time to further report the results.’ Democratic party members have been waiting for the caucus results to come in overnight in Des Moines, Iowa. (Picture: Joe Raedle/Getty Images) Following the results of the Iowa caucuses, the next three early-voting states of New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina will all cast their votes over the course of this month. A further 15 states and territories will vote on 3 March but a final nominee for the Democratic Party will not be crowned until July 2020.
