He announced his number two, Vice President Mike Pence, would oversee the domestic response to the virus known as Covid-19, which he said added not necessarily become a pandemic. President Trump told a White House news conference: ‘This will end. You don’t want to see panic because there’s no reason to be panicked.’ The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention later announced a person in California had been diagnosed with the infection, despite seemingly not having travelled abroad or been exposed to another person with it. Surrounded by his administration’s top health experts, Trump told reporters the outbreak ‘may get a little bigger; it may not get bigger at all’. He also distanced himself from public health officials’ warnings that the infection would almost certainly spread within the US. Trump said: ‘I don’t think it’s inevitable. I think it has a chance it could get worse. There’s a chance you can get fairly substantially worse. But nothing’s inevitable.’ Trump announced Vice President Mike Pence would be leading the domestic effort to prevent the infection’s spread (Picture: Anadolu Agency via Getty Images) His top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, echoed the president’s outlook, saying earlier this week that the US had ‘contained’ the threat of a domestic outbreak. But their comments were at odds with warnings from the CDC which advised communities to prepare for a potential spread of the infection. Trump’s own health officials stressed that schools, businesses and individuals need to get ready. One of those, Dr Anne Schuchat, said: ‘We do expect more cases.’ Lawrence Gostin, a professor of global health law at Georgetown University, also added: ‘The messaging by the White House is unhelpful. ‘What the White House is doing is conveying a sense of overconfidence. Of course we do want to maintain calm with the public, but it flies in the face of facts.’ More: Donald Trump Donald Trump blasts Michelle Obama over her 'love’ for Harvey Weinstein Donald and Melania Trump look loved-up and happy during trip to Taj Mahal Donald Trump sends invite to Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder after world title classic In Asia, China and South Korea each reported hundreds more cases of the virus. China reported 433 new cases, mostly in Wuhan, where the virus emerged in December, bringing the country’s total to 78,497 cases. Beijing also said there had been 29 more deaths, taking its toll to 2,744. South Korea reported 334 more cases, bringing its total to 1,595. Most were in the country’s fourth-biggest city, Daegu, where the outbreak has hit hardest. But there are signs the virus is spreading with dozens of cases in Seoul and South Korea’s second-largest city, Busan. Brazil has also confirmed its first case, while numbers continue to climb in Europe and the Middle East. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
