Mourners have packed the streets to pay their final respects to assassinated general Qasem Soleimani (Picture: AP; Getty) Thousands have packed the streets of Tehran chanting ‘down with USA’ and ‘death to USA’ ahead of the burial or Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani. Mourners flocked to the capital to pay their final respects to the general, who was killed in a US airstrike in Baghdad on Friday. His remains have been transported to his hometown of Kerman in south-eastern Iran where he is being buried later today. At his funeral procession in the capital on Monday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei led prayers and at one point was seen weeping. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T1M29S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/01\/07\/06\/23090690-0-image-a-14_1578380206897.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-01-07T06:49:20+0000”,“description”:“Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani is buried in Kerman, Iran.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/01\/07\/721312667129591727\/640x360_MP4_721312667129591727.mp4”,“height”:360,“width”:640} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Iranian state TV showed huge crowds of black-clad mourners clutching pictures of the general and said millions had turned out for the event, although this figure has not been verified. Soleimani, considered by many as the country’s second most powerful figure, shaped Iran’s foreign policy in the Middle East and was hailed as a national hero in his hometown. His death has dramatically escalated tensions between Iran and the USA with many fearful it will lead to war. Meanwhile President Donald Trump has ignored calls for de-escalation and threatened to bomb Iranian cultural sites if the country sought revenge for his killing. Soleimani, 62, headed Iran’s elite Quds Force, and was tasked with protecting and boosting Iran’s influence in the Middle East. Not all Iranian’s saw him in a positive light, owing to his dominant position in a regime that shot dead scores of protesters and spent vast sums building military alliances despite crippling economic sanctions imposed by the Trump administration. Soleimani was commander of Iran’s Quds Force (Picture: AP) Just weeks before his death, thousands of anti-government protesters had filled the streets to voice their frustration with Iran’s leaders. But his death seems to have united Iranians, who over the last three days have packed the streets to mourn the leader, burning US flags and chanting anti-US slogans. Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
