It stretches more than three-quarters of a mile from an industrial site in Tijuana through to San Diego, California. The newly discovered tunnel – standing five-and-a-half feet tall and two feet wide – features an extensive rail cart system, air ventilation, an elevator at the entrance and a drainage system. While there were no arrests, no drugs found at the site and no confirmed exit point in the States, the length – more than 14 football fields – stunned authorities. A covered access point leading to a smuggling tunnel is seen on the US side of the border wall in San Diego (Picture: AP) The tunnel comes complete with an elevator system at the entrance (Picture: DEA) Authorities didn’t say who they believe was behind the tunnel but the area has been a stronghold of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel. Its longtime leader, Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, was jailed for life in the US back in July. The tunnel’s discovery made a mockery of President Donald Trump’s border wall, which extends several feet below ground and is considered effective against small, crudely built tunnels known as ‘gopher holes’. Buried around 21 meters underground, the tunnel sits well beneath the wall, which only extends a few feet below the surface. It also has an extensive rail cart system which authorities suspect was used to transport drugs across the border (Picture: DEA) Following its discovery in August, Mexican law enforcement identified the entrance and US investigators mapped the tunnel which extends 4,309 feet. The next longest tunnel in the US was discovered in San Diego back in 2014 and measured 2,966 feet long. Lance LeNoir, a Border Patrol operations supervisor, said the latest discovery ‘blows past’ the old record-holder. He added: ‘We never really thought they had the moxie to go that far. They continue to surprise me.’ The tunnel originates in an industrial area in Tijuana and stretches across to San Diego (Picture: EPA/US Customs and Border Protection) Border agents found a supply of oxygen canisters to help smugglers breath underground (Picture: EPA/US Customs and Border Protection) Agents were confident the tunnel exited in San Diego after finding an old suspected exit blocked off with hundreds of sand bags in the city’s Otay Mesa industrial area. It went under several warehouses and extended into open fields. An incomplete offshoot suggested the smugglers had plugged one exit and were building another. Morant is the acting special agent in charge of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations unit in San Diego. He said: ‘The sophistication and length of this particular tunnel demonstrates the time-consuming efforts transnational criminal organizations will undertake to facilitate cross-border smuggling.’ Authorities have found 15 sophisticated tunnels on California’s border with Mexico since 2006, with hallmarks including lighting, ventilation, railway tracks and hydraulic lifts. They are concentrated in Otay Mesa, where the clay-like soil is conducive to digging and warehouses provide cover. Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
