Donald Trump has re-introduced a flight ban to Cuba (Picture: AP) Americans will no longer be able to take direct flights to most Cuban airports. US President Donald Trump has reintroduced a ban to services to all destinations in the country except for capital Havana. It’s the latest move from the Republican leader to roll back the Obama-era easing of relations with Cuba. The US says it is unhappy with the Caribbean country for repressing its people and supporting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. American officials hope to starve Cuba of funds. Opponents of the ban have said it will just make it harder for Cuban-Americans to visit their families outside the capital, without making a significant impact on the government. President Donald Trump is not as friendly to Cuba as Barack Obama was (Picture: AP) The State Department confirmed JetBlue flights to Santa Clara in central Cuba and the eastern cities of Holguin, Camaguey would be banned starting in December. American Airlines flights to Camaguey, Holguin and Santa Clara, the beach resort of Varadero and the eastern city of Santiago are also being banned. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted: ‘This action will prevent the Castro regime from profiting from US air travel and using the revenues to repress the Cuban people.’ Raul Castro stepped down as president last year but remains head of the Communist Party, the country’s highest authority. Cuban families trying to visit families at home will be hit hardest (Picture: AP) Head of Cuba’s Department of US affairs Carlos F. de Cossio said on Twitter: ‘Eager to punish Cuba’s unbreakable defiance, imperialism is going after regular flights to various Cuban cities. ‘It doesn’t matter that they’re affecting family relations, or the modest pocketbooks of most Cubans in both countries,” He added: ‘Our response isn’t changing.’ Another stated reason for the move is to prevent tourism to Cuba, which is barred by US law.
