The president repeated his incorrect claim at a conference at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Picture: Reuters) President Trump stunned advisers and weather forecasters, after incorrectly claiming that a deadly hurricane would hit Alabama. The commander-in-chief also denied he had ever heard of a ‘category five storm’, a claim he has made on at least four separate occasions. He made his claim in reference to the path of hurricane Dorian, which has left five people dead and caused ‘unprecedented’ damage in the Bahamas. Although the storm has stalled over the Bahamas, it is ‘dangerously’ close to the US east coast, with over a million residents from Florida, Georgia and South Carolina being evacuated. However, Trump took to Twitter on Sunday to say that Alabama would be one of the states that would be badly affected. He said: ‘In addition to Florida – South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, will most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated. ‘Looking like one of the largest hurricanes ever. They tweeted in response: ‘Alabama will NOT see any impacts from #Dorian. We repeat, no impacts from Hurricane #Dorian will be felt across Alabama. ‘The system will remain too far east. #alwx’. However, the president repeated his claims about the impact on Alabama at a later press conference. Alabama will NOT see any impacts from #Dorian. The system will remain too far east. #alwx — NWS Birmingham (@NWSBirmingham) September 1, 2019 Addressing the media at the headquarters of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) headquarters in Washington DC, he said ‘Alabama could be in for some very strong winds and something more than that, it could be’. He added: ‘So, for Alabama, just please be careful also.’ He also went on to claim that he had never heard of a category five storm before. However, social media users were quick to highlight that Trump had made the same claim on numerous occasions before. Hurricane Dorian has left five people dead in the Bahamas The president’s critics say his mistake shows how little an understanding of geography he has. However, the president took to Twitter to hit out at critics and defend his mistake. He wrote: ‘I suggested yesterday at FEMA that, along with Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, even Alabama could possibly come into play, which WAS true.
