Donald Trump has given his backing to his ‘friend’ Boris Johnson Donald Trump has backed Boris Johnson to be the next prime minister saying he would be ‘excellent’ at the job. The US leader has thrown his weight behind his ‘friend’ and US officials are said to be organising a meeting between the two men during Mr Trump’s three-day UK state visit next week. The backing – which is just short of an official endorsement – is a major breach of protocol and risks sparking a diplomatic incident between London and Washington. Mr Trump is due to meet Theresa May on Tuesday and she has delayed her resignation to greet him. The US leader claimed to have studied the Conservative party leadership contest and the 12 current candidates. I think he would be excellent.’ The president added: ‘I like him. I have always liked him. I don’t know that he is going to be chosen, but I think he is a very good guy, a very talented person. ‘He has been very positive about me and our country.’ Mr Trump also claimed other candidates had approached him in a bid to secure his endorsement. He said: ‘Other people have asked me for an endorsement too. I have been asked for endorsements’. He added: ‘I could help anybody if I endorse them. I mean, we’ve had endorsement where they have gone up for 40, 50 points at a shot. ‘Now that is here, but I understand over there would be a great endorsement.’ Donald Trump says Boris Johnson will do ‘an excellent job’ if he gets the keys to Number 10 (Picture: AFP) Theresa May’s successor will be chosen by members of the Conservative Party rather than by the general public. Mr Trump has previously spoken of his admiration for Mr Johnson and senior White House officials are said to be attempting a meeting between the two men during the three-day trip. The US leader said Mr Johnson’s colourful private life should not stop him becoming Prime Minister. Speaking about the MP’s well-documented extra-marital affairs, Mr Trump said: ‘Well it always matters but I think that it’s certainly not what it was 20 years ago and not certainly what it was 50 years ago. ‘I think today it matters much less.’ The US leader will meet the Queen, Prince Charles, William and Harry during a series of engagements which begin on Monday. Mr Trump was also outspoken about Meghan Markle, saying her comments that he is a ‘misogynist’ were ‘nasty.’ Diplomats are said to be worried about the US leader’s outspokenness. The former deputy head of London’s US embassy, Lewis Lukens, told BBC Radio 4’s Today: ‘My biggest worry would be that the president goes off script, says something inappropriate or that breaks protocol, and we end up trying to mitigate the damage.’
