Donald and Melania Trump will meet the Queen on the first day of UK state visit (Picture: PA/Getty) Donald Trump and wife Melania have a busy schedule planned for the first day of their state visit to the UK. The US President kicks off his controversial three day trip with a day of meet-and-greets with the Queen and other members of the Royal family. Trump took off from Joint Base Andrew near Washington DC at around 8.45pm on Sunday evening – around 1.45am UK time – and they are expected to land at Stansted airport in Air Force One this morning. After landing in London, the president and First Lady will fly by helicopter to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen, Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. The Queen will host a state banquet at Buckingham Palace later, but before that, Trump will receive a ceremonial welcome in the palace garden before inspecting the Guard of Honour. Donald Trump made a mistake last year when he turned his back on the Queen and walked in front of her while inspecting the guard at Windsor Castle. He was heavily criticised for breaking royal protocol when he marched ahead of the monarch, appearing completely ‘oblivious’ to her presence. According to royal etiquette, one should never turn their back on the monarch, or walk in front of her. Later, royal gun salutes will fire in Green Park and at the Tower of London to mark the arrival of the POTUS and FLOTUS. They will then visit Westminster Abbey where the president is due to lay a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior. His first day will end with the state banquet, at which both he and the Queen will give speeches. The president sparked controversy over the weekend by calling on Britain to be ready to leave the European Union without a deal and refuse to pay the £39 billion divorce bill if Brussels refuses to meet its demands. Later, Trump will meet Theresa May, days before her resignation (Picture: AFP/Getty) Trump has already sparked controversy by saying he believes the Government should bring Nigel Farage into Brexit negotiations (Picture: AP) He also urged the Government to send Nigel Farage into the negotiations. He told the Sunday Times it was a ‘mistake’ not to involve Brexit Party leader Mr Farage in negotiations, saying he has a ‘lot to offer’ and is someone he likes ‘a lot’. The president also weighed in on the Tory leadership race, telling the Sun: ‘I think Boris (Johnson) would do a very good job. ‘I think he would be excellent. I like him. I have always liked him. ‘I don’t know that he is going to be chosen but I think he is a very good guy, a very talented person.’ Before his visit, Trump came under fire for calling Meghan Markle ‘nasty’ but he has since insisted he was misquoted, despite a recording of the interview being published. Meghan has been a vocal critic of the US President in the past and backed his political rival Hillary Clinton. The Trump baby blimp will fly over London during a planned protest against Trump’s visit on Tuesday (Picture: Getty) Thousands of ‘Stop Trump’ demonstrators marched through London in 2018 (Picture: PA) Before the 2016 presidential election the duchess suggested she would leave the US if the former reality TV star won. In a recent interview with The Sun newspaper,Trump claimed he was unaware of Meghan’s comments and said: ‘I didn’t know that. What can I say? I didn’t know that she was nasty.’ In a Twitter post on Sunday, the President denied making the comment and said: ‘I never called Meghan Markle “nasty”. Made up by the Fake News Media, and they got caught cold!’ Thousands of people are expected to join a protest through central London on Tuesday when the Trump baby blimp – first made for the president’s visit to the UK last year – is due to fly once more.
