Tensions in the gulf have been rising after the US blamed Iran for attacks on oil tankers Prime Minister Theresa May has urged Iran to uphold its obligations under the 2015 nuclear deal, and warned escalations in the region were in ‘no one’s interests’. Mrs May made the comments earlier today at her last G20 meeting in Japan. She added: ‘We need engagements on all sides to find a diplomatic solution to the current situation, and to counter Iran’s destabilising activity. ‘At the same time, the UK will continue to work with our JCPOA partners to do all we can to keep the Iran nuclear deal in place.’ It comes as the US beefed up its forces in the region, sending additional warplanes to the area, ‘to defend American forces and interests’. Theresa May told the G-20 summit in Osaka, Japan that a diplomatic solution with Iran must be found to resolve current tensions (Picture: AP) The additional deployment comes a week after Iran shot down a US drone it claimed violated its airspace, and which Washington insisted was over international waters. The downing of the drone was one of a series of flashpoints between Iran and the US. The US has also said Iran was behind explosions on two oil tankers this month near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital strategic shipping routes, as well as on four commercial ships off the coast of the United Arab Emirates last month. Iran has categorically denied responsibility for the ship attacks. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has threatened to pull out of the nuclear deal (Picture: Reuters) The US has sent F-22 Raptors to Qatar in order to defend American forces and interests in the U.S. in the area (Picture: Tech. Sgt. Nichelle Anderson/U.S. Air Force) Yesterday, it said some progress had been made at a meeting with world powers over its nuclear accord – but probably ‘not enough’ to keep the landmark 2015 deal alive. ‘It was a step forward, but it is still not enough and not meeting Iran’s expectations,’ said Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, Tehran has threatened to withdraw from key commitments in the deal, probably on 7 July, a move that might force European powers to reluctantly join the US and quit the deal signed in 2015. The deal was designed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Got a story for Metro.co.uk? If you have a story for our news team, email us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
