Donald Trump has invited Kim Jong Un to meet him at the DMZ, which separates North and South Korea (Pictures: AP) Donald Trump has claimed that Kim Jong Un is following him on Twitter – despite the social media platform being banned in North Korea. The US President made the claim after issuing a spontaneous invitation for Kim to meet him at the demilitarised zone (DMZ), which has separated the two Koreas since 1953. He tweeted: ‘If Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!’ Shortly after his offer, a North Korea official called it a ‘very interesting suggestion’ but refused to confirm if a meeting would be on the cards. Trump later said he ‘got a call very quickly’ about the offer and claimed: ‘He follows me on Twitter’. The two leaders have not met since their summit broke down in February (Picture: AFP/Getty) The DMZ is the heavily fortified border that separates North and South Korea (Picture: AP) He did not make any mention of the multiple international news reports that had been written about his invitation. Kim Jong Un formally banned Twitter in 2016 in a bid to control the flow of digital information being shared in his country. Very few North Koreans have access to the internet and the ones that do must use a government-sanctioned intranet, which is heavily monitored. Trump also said he would ‘feel very comfortable’ stepping across the border at the meeting, which would make him the first US President in history to step onto North Korean soil. He also insisted it would not be a bad sign if Kim was to stand him up. Twitter is banned in North Korea (Picture: AFP/Getty) What is the DMZ? The DMZ, which runs across the Korean Peninsula, is 154 miles (248km) long and 2.5 miles (4km) wide. It was created as a buffer at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War, and is jointly overseen by the American-led UN Command and North Korea. Hundreds of thousands of North and South Korean troops are now deployed along the DMZ, which is littered with an estimated two million mines, tank traps, razor wire fences and guard posts. When asked if it would be a negative thing if Kim failed to meet him, Trump said: ‘No, of course I thought of that.’ Trump is due to arrive in Seoul later this evening for a summit with South Korean leader Moon Jae-in. Presidential visits to the DMZ are traditionally treated as carefully guarded secrets for security reasons. White House officials couldn’t immediately say whether Kim had agreed to meet with Trump. The president himself claimed he wasn’t even sure Kim was in North Korea to accept the invitation. Trump is set to meet South Korean leader Moon Jae-in later this afternoon (Picture: AFP/Getty) ‘All I did is put out a feeler, if you’d like to meet,’ Trump said later of the message to Kim. He added that he ‘just thought of it this morning.’ Trump’s invitation comes after February’s failed summit between the US and North Korea, which ended early after the two leaders reportedly refused to compromise on a denuclearisation deal. He became the first sitting US president to meet with the leader last year in Singapore, where they signed a broad agreement to bring the North toward denuclearization. Substantive talks between the nations have broken down since then, as the North has refused to give up its weapons to get any relief from international sanctions. Trump has sought to heap praise on Kim in the hope of keeping the prospects of a deal alive and the two have traded flowery letters in recent weeks. Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
