Trump has expressed support for leadership hopeful Boris Johnson (Photo: Kevin Lamarque / REUTERS) Donald Trump spends most of his time insulting people: women, immigrants, Muslims, judges, even his fellow Republicans. It’s instructive, therefore, to look at the much smaller group of people he praises. This week, that’s Conservative Party politicians: most notably Boris Johnson. Part of the reason for that is Brexit, of course. Trump is an isolationist. He has threatened to pull the United States out of NATO and the World Trade Organisation, undermining international co-operation on defence and trade. He has actually pulled out of the Paris Climate Change Agreement and the Iran Nuclear Deal, undermining international action to tackle the climate emergency and prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. He thinks everything is a zero-sum game, and has even called the European Union his ‘foe’. So it’s no surprise that he’s a vocal advocate for the United Kingdom leaving it. And Trump knows that the Conservative Government will be so desperate to cut a trade deal with the US after Brexit that he’ll be able to impose terms that are very favourable to American businesses and very unfavourable to British consumers. That will likely mean lower food safety standards, weaker environmental protections and the potential for US companies to buy up parts of our National Health Service. Good for Trump and his fellow American businessowners; bad for us. But Trump’s praise for Conservatives is about much more than just Brexit. The truth is that there’s a lot of similarity between Trump’s vision for his country and the Tories’ vision for ours. Take taxes. Trump’s signature legislative ‘accomplishment’ is a tax bill that overwhelmingly benefits corporations and the wealthy – including himself – and does very little for everyone else. On this side of the Atlantic, the Conservative leadership candidates are competing over who can propose the biggest tax cut for corporations and high-earners. When it comes to schools funding or the benefits system, they’re all ever-so-concerned about the deficit. When it comes to tax cuts for the rich, not so much. On climate change, few Conservatives are in quite as total denial as Trump is. But that hasn’t stopped them slashing subsidies for solar energy, abandoning tidal power, scrapping the zero-carbon homes policy and championing fracking. Trump has frequently attacked wind turbines – even claiming ludicrously that ‘the noise causes cancer’. The Tories have expressed a disinterest in wind energy too. More: TV Michael Barrymore apologises for Stuart Lubbock’s death for first time: ‘I f***ed up’ Waitrose is launching 'Gin O’ Clock’ - a gin tasting session delivered to your home Donald Trump damages Churchill hat immediately Piers Morgan gives it to him Then there’s immigration – the target of Trump’s most appalling policies. He has put record numbers of asylum seekers and migrant children in detention centres. He has given the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) the mission and powers to drive out people without immigration status, without regard for human rights. His aim is to make life so unpleasant for immigrants – documented or not – that they choose to leave the country. it’s Theresa May’s ‘hostile environment’ with an American accent. Trump also imposed a ‘travel ban’ that prevents people entering the US from seven countries – five of them majority-Muslim. It’s the sort of thing you’d think could never happen here in the UK, but the Conservatives have introduced their own version of the travel ban: a new law that makes it a crime to travel to or remain in an area overseas designated by the Home Secretary as necessary to protect the public from terrorism. Anyone returning from these places could face up to 10 years in prison. Perhaps what most attracts Trump to today’s Conservatives, though, is the language they use. He has built his political career on rhetoric that disparages refugees, demonises immigrants, and stokes racial and religious animus. He must therefore have seen something of himself in Johnson’s article describing women who wear burqas as looking like ‘letterboxes’ and ‘bank robbers.’ And it’s not just Johnson. Remember Theresa May’s appalling conference speech denigrating ‘citizens of nowhere?’ Or Sajid Javid scaremongering about refugees and questioning whether asylum seekers are ‘genuine?’ It’s far too easy to imagine the exact same words coming out of Trump’s mouth. So Trump’s praise for the current crop of Tory leadership candidates makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, when he leaves the UK on Air Force One today, his toxic blend of ‘trickle-down’ economics, climate denial, isolationism and nationalism won’t leave with him.
