If you go to the White House expecting fine dining by top chefs you would be mistaken. Donald Trump has resorted to ordering in McDonald’s, Burger King, pizza and Wendy’s because the chefs have all walked out. They are among 800,000 U.S. government workers who are not being paid as the shutdown continues as a result of deadlock over the President’s plans for a wall on the border with Mexico. He revealed that initially he was going to serve up salad prepared by First Lady Melania Trump, but opted for fast food saying: ‘I would think that’s their favourite food.’ He said: ‘We ordered American fast food. Paid for by me. Lots of hamburgers, lots of pizza, I think they’d like it better than anything we could give. ‘We have some very large people that like eating, so I think we’re gonna have a little fun.’ He said he ordered 1,000 hamburgers to the White House along with chicken nuggets and pizza. Trump added: ‘I had a choice: do we have no food for you, because we have a shutdown, or do we give you some little quick salads that the first lady will make along with the second lady, they’ll make some salads. And I said, you guys aren’t into salads.’ The burgers just kept coming (Picture: Reuters) Donald Trump made sure that people knew he paid for all the food (Picture: Reuters) He said he ordered 1,000 burgers from various different fast food chains (Picture: AP) He said his wife wanted to serve them salad but he believed he knew what they would prefer (Picture: Reuters) Guests attending a reception for the Clemson Tigers grab fast food sandwiches in the State Dining Room (Picture: AP) Chefs are not working because they aren’t being paid as a result of the government shutdown (Picture: AP) (Picture: Getty) (Picture: AFP) ‘We have everything that I like, that you like. And I know no matter what we did, there’s nothing that you could have that’s better than that.’ ‘I wanted to see, so it was piled up a mile high, I just wanted to see what was left. I saw it at the beginning.’ The visit by the Clemson football team was its second since Trump has become president. The Tigers last visited in June 2017 after their championship run the previous season. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has nominated this season’s undefeated Tigers as the best college team ever. Trump calls them a ‘great team, an unbelievable team.’ Trump has routinely sparred with professional athletes during his two years in office. College football has managed to avoid such political controversies with last year’s champion Alabama also visiting the White House.
