It turned out to be a press conference announcing the resignation of Nikki Haley, US ambassador to the UN. The news was something even many White House staffers were unaware of before yesterday, and was a closely guarded secret between Haley and Trump. But why did she go, and what will she be doing next? She said: ‘It was a blessing to go into the UN. with body armor every day and defend America… I’ll never truly step aside from fighting for our country. ‘But I will tell you that I think it’s time.’ Trump echoed the fond statements saying, ‘She’s done a fantastic job, and we’ve done a fantastic job together. We’re all happy for you in one way, but we hate to lose you.’ Sources have told publications in the US that there’s no animosity behind the decision, which is likely echoed by the fact they held the press conference together, unlike what’s happened in the past during Trump team resignations. It seems that, despite clashes, Haley and Trump are on good terms (Picture: EPA/JUSTIN LANE) Some did speculate that Haley may run for president herself in 2020, and that may be a reason for her departure, but this was denied by the former South Carolina governor. Despite the fact Haley had been at odds with Trump on various issues, it seems that the resignation is simply due to fatigue after two years in a stressful job. Due to Trump’s controversial policies, she had had to stand on the world stage and speak on contentious issues. Being the messenger for Donald Trump is likely not a task that comes without a lot of pressure. There is also the issue of calls for Haley to be investigated, after a watchdog found that she and her husband had accepted free flights from various businessmen, which may breach the code of ethics she’s beholden to. CREW Executive Director Noah Bookbinder, who is leading the investigation calls stated, ‘By accepting gifts of luxury private flights, Ambassador Haley seems to be falling in line with other Trump administration officials who are reaping personal benefits from their public positions.’ Haley has not said that these claims have anything to do with the resignation, however.
