The outgoing US President Trump has been lashing out on Twitter after the election (Picture: AP) Donald Trump has attacked the company behind a promising new coronavirus vaccine, in yet another extraordinary Twitter outburst. The outgoing US President — who has made a series of unfounded claims on social media about last week’s election being ‘rigged’ — accused Pfizer Inc. of not having ‘the courage’ to release preliminary data on its jab before the vote. It comes after the pharmaceutical giant raised hopes of a return to normal life by the spring, after finding that its vaccine had ’90% effectiveness’ in early human trials. Mr Trump tweeted: ‘As I have long said, Pfizer and the others would only announce a Vaccine after the Election, because they didn’t have the courage to do it before. Likewise, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should have announced it earlier, not for political purposes, but for saving lives!’ He added: ‘If Joe Biden were President, you wouldn’t have the Vaccine for another four years, nor would the FDA have ever approved it so quickly. The bureaucracy would have destroyed millions of lives!’ Visit our live blog for the latest updates Coronavirus news live Under Mr Trump’s Presidency, the USA has recorded the highest number of Covid-19 deaths and cases in the world. On Saturday, Mr Biden was declared president-elect, but Mr Trump has refused to concede the election, despite providing no evidence of voter fraud. The outgoing President’s latest outburst comes despite him cheering the vaccine breakthrough earlier on Monday and as his top lawyer was condemned for giving the green light to an investigation into the election. Pfizer has insisted that its work is not influenced by politics and that it was ‘moving at the speed of science.’ Pfizer learned of the interim results of its study on Sunday (Picture: Reuters) The company itself learned of the interim results on Sunday after its independent data monitors met to discuss them. The FDA was not involved in Pfizer’s decision to announce its early results and did not make any announcements of its own. Mr Trump, who had suggested repeatedly during the presidential campaign that a vaccine could be ready by election day, tweeted: ‘STOCK MARKET UP BIG, VACCINE COMING SOON. REPORT 90% EFFECTIVE. SUCH GREAT NEWS!’ Mr Biden welcomed the news but cautioned that it could be many months before vaccinations become widespread in the US, and he warned Americans to rely on masks and social distancing in the meantime. He added that the country still faces a ‘dark winter.’ More: Coronavirus Weekly coronavirus deaths pass 1,000 for first time in five months ‘Lockdown’ is named the Word of the Year for 2020 Matt Hancock ambushed live on TV by Good Morning Britain Confirmed infections in the US topped 10 million on Monday, the highest in the world. New cases are running at all-time highs of more than 100,000 per day, while nearly 240,000 Americans are dead, according to Johns Hopkins data. And tens of thousands more deaths are feared in the coming months, with the onset of cold weather and the holidays. Meanwhile, prosecutors have been told to pursue ‘substantial allegations’ of voting irregularities, despite the lack of evidence, by Mr Trump’s attorney general William Barr. Nurse re-arrested on suspicion of murdering eight babies Mr Barr, has been widely criticised for a memo to American attorneys, which said that investigations ‘may be conducted if there are clear and apparently-credible allegations of irregularities that, if true, could potentially impact the outcome of a federal election in an individual State’, the Associated Press reported. He said any allegations that would ‘clearly not impact the outcome of a federal election’ should be delayed until after those elections are certified and prosecutors should likely open so-called preliminary inquiries, which would allow investigators and prosecutors to see if there is evidence that would allow them to take further investigative measures. Mr Barr did not identify any specific instances of fraud in the memo. His move prompted the top official at US Department of Justice, Richard Pilger, to resign in protest.
