Donald Trump has won Kentucky as the first results of the US presidential election are announced Donald Trump has held the state of Kentucky as the first results from the US presidential election are announced. The Republican candidate has held on the state he won in 2016, bagging himself eight electoral college votes. Within minutes of the polls closing in the southern state, the Associated Press declared it for the president based on early analysis of voting statistics. Kentucky is the home state of vice president Mike Pence and traditionally backs the Republican candidate. The state hasn’t been won by a Democratic candidate since Bill Clinton during his first presidential race and his re-election campaign in 1996. Mr Trump won the state by a huge margin of 29.8 points four years ago, in what was one of his strongest performances. Five states – Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vermont and Virginia – had their polls close at 7pm ET along with most of Florida. Donald Trump picked up Kentucky, Indiana and West Virginia, as he was expected to do, and Joe Biden took Vermont, also as expected. Results in Georgia and Florida are expected to be more heavily contested and could provide some indication of the way the rest of the night may unfold. Mitch McConnell has also been projected to retain his Kentucky seat on the senate, according to Fox News. The key Trump ally had faced a challenge from Democrat Amy McGrath but has apparently secured his seventh six year term. He will be 85 by the next election.
