US president Donald Trump with infectious diseases expert Anthony Fauci (Pictures: Getty Images) The expert who has been at the forefront of the US’ response to coronavirus has said he was ‘absolutely not’ surprised when Donald Trump contracted the disease. Dr Anthony Fauci, the highly regarded infectious diseases expert, said he was ‘worried’ for the president’s health after seeing him mixing with crowds without wearing a mask. In a rare media interview after he was sidelined by the White House for being too outspoken, Dr Fauci said he put his head in his hands when he watched the scenes in the White House rose garden shortly before Mr Trump’s positive test result was announced. Speaking to 60 Minutes, he said: ‘I was worried that he was going to get sick when I saw him in a completely precarious situation of crowded, no separation between people, and almost nobody wearing a mask. And then sure enough it turned out to be a super-spreader event.’ Mr Trump’s team have refused to say when his last negative test took place before he was diagnosed on Friday, October 2. Some fear he was contagious as early as Saturday, September 26 when he announced his supreme court nominee Amy Coney Barrett in the White House Rose Garden. Certainly, several attendees at this event came down with the virus in the immediate aftermath. Here Mr Trump claimed that the US was ‘rounding the turn’ of the pandemic, despite Friday seeing 68,000 new cases – the highest daily number since July. The rally drew thousands of supporters who sat elbow to elbow, cheering Trump and booing Joe Biden and the press. The vast majority didn’t wear a mask, though cases in the state are on the rise, with more than 1,000 new infections reported Saturday. Joe Biden at a drive-in campaign rally in North Carolina (Picture: Getty Images) Mr Trump warned that a Democrat win would lead to further lockdowns and at one point mocked his rival for saying he would listen to scientists. He said: ’He’ll listen to the scientists. If I listened totally to the scientists, we would right now have a country that would be in a massive depression.’ Mr Biden meanwhile campaigned in North Carolina on Sunday, another key state. At a drive-in rally in Durham, he responded to Trump’s repeated claims that the US had turned a corner in the pandemic. He said: ’As my grandfather would say, this guy’s gone around the bend if he thinks we’ve turned the corner. Turning the corner? Things are getting worse.’ Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk. For more stories like this, check our news page.
