Donald Trump told a rally of supporters the journalist getting hit was ‘law and order’ (Picture: EPA) Donald Trump told a rally it was a ‘beautiful thing’ when police officers shot a journalist covering a Black Lives Matter protest with a rubber bullet. MSNBC journalist Ali Velishi was covering a protest in Minnesota, in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death under the knee of a police officer, on May 30 when he was struck by a rubber bullet. The President referenced the incident on Friday but incorrectly said it had been a tear gas canister that struck the journalist. Addressing a cheering crowd in Minnesota he said: ‘I remember this guy Velshi. He got hit on the knee with a canister of tear gas and he went down. He was down. “My knee, my knee.” ‘These guys didn’t care. They moved him aside and they just walked right through. It was like the most beautiful thing. ‘It’s called law and order.’ Mr Veleshi responded the day after, correcting the President on what hit him and questioned what about legally covering a protest required ‘law and order’. He said:’So, @realDonaldTrump, you call my getting hit by authorities in Minneapolis on 5/30/20 (by a rubber bullet, btw, not a tear gas cannister) a “beautiful thing” called “law and order”. What law did I break while covering an entirely peaceful (yes, entirely peaceful) march?’ {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T40S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/09\/21\/08\/33427346-0-image-a-10_1600674806511.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-09-21T08:50:50+0100”,“description”:“Trump describes moment MSNBC journalist Ali Velshi being struck with rubber bullet at a George Floyd protest in Minnesota as a ‘beautiful thing’.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/09\/21\/6898570826938141454\/480x270_MP4_6898570826938141454.mp4”,“height”:270,“width”:480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Ali Veleshi hit back at the President on Twitter asking what he had done that was illegal (Picture: Getty Images) The MSNBC also released a statement slamming Donald Trump for ‘endangering journalists’ and ‘undermining their freedoms’. The statement said: ‘Freedom of the press is a pillar of our democracy. ‘When the president mocks a journalist for the injury he sustained while putting himself in harm’s way to inform the public, he endangers thousands of other journalists and undermines our freedoms.’ Mr Trump then launched an attack on representative Ilhan Omar, who is a Muslim American woman, and asked the crowd: ‘Are you having a good time with your refugees? How the hell did she win?’ More: Donald Trump Trump said it was a 'beautiful thing’ when journalist was hit with rubber bullet Donald Trump tells rally 'I will never speak to you again’ if he loses Colby Covington halts post-fight interview to take phone call from Donald Trump Minnesota has a long history of backing Democrat candidates, meaning Trump has made a specific effort with the state in hopes of winning it over in November after narrowly losing it in 2016. He has visited the state regularly and focused on rural issues in the area, reversing the Obama administration’s prohibition of copper-nickel mining and bailed out soybean, corn and other farmers who struggled through the trade war with China. He told the rally at the regional airport in Bemidji they ‘wouldn’t have Minneapolis’ if Trump had not sent the national guard in. ‘Forty-six days from now we’re going to win Minnesota and we’re going to win four more years in the White House,’ he said.
