Phase 3 trials of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine have been put on hold (Picture: AP/AFP) Trials of the coronavirus vaccine being developed by Oxford University have been put on hold due to a suspected serious reaction in one of the participants. Researchers have paused the tests while they investigate the unexplained illness of a volunteer in the UK. The vaccine is being tested on thousands of people in Britain and the US, as well as in smaller study groups in Brazil and South America. AstraZeneca, the pharmaceutical giant manufacturing the jab, said the pause was a ‘routine action’ and that it is speeding up the investigation to minimise any potential impact on the trial’s timeline They said: ‘In large trials, illnesses will happen by chance but must be independently reviewed to check this carefully. ‘We are working to expedite the review of the single event to minimise any potential impact on the trial timeline. We are committed to the safety of our participants and the highest standards of conduct in our trials.’ The side effects are not currently known, but the participant was expected to recover. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T59S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/09\/07\/10\/32868268-0-image-a-118_1599469493190.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-09-07T10:02:58+0100”,“description”:“The Health Secretary reveals that the UK is not likely to receive a Covid-19 vaccine until ‘the first few months of next year’.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/09\/07\/2146310009995443119\/640x360_MP4_2146310009995443119.mp4”,“height”:360,“width”:640}
