The President of the United States allegedly refused to visit the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris during a November 2018 to France, saying: ‘Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.’ Trump is also said to have branded the 1,800 American servicemen who lost their lives in the 1918 Battle of Belleau Wood as ‘suckers’, despite their sacrifice helping halt the advance of German troops towards Paris. According to The Atlantic, during the same trip, Trump asked aides: ‘Who were the good guys in this war?’ and expressed incredulity over why the United States had intervened on the side of allied forces. Donald Trump is pictured with French President Emmanuel Macron during his November 2018 trip to Paris (Picture: Getty) Claims of Trump refusing to visit the cemetery because of the poor weather hit the headlines days after the 2018 visit. The president attracted further ridicule after lying that ‘the helicopter wouldn’t fly’ and the US Secret Service were unable to drive him to the location. Trump previously stunned US servicemen and women in 2015 after referring to the late Arizona Senator John McCain as a ‘loser’ for getting captured by enemy forces during the Vietnam War. When McCain died in 2018, Trump was reportedly furious about the official recognition of his death, saying: ‘We’re not going to support that loser’s funeral.’ And on realizing flags had been lowered to half-staff, the president is said to have snapped: ‘What the fuck are we doing that for? Guy was a fucking loser.’ Trump himself managed to dodge being drafted to fight in the Vietnam War by getting a doctor’s note claiming he had bone spurs in his feet that meant he was unable to serve. Atlantic writer Jeffrey Goldberg speculated that President Trump thinks of every interaction in life as a transaction, and cannot understand why servicemen and women would choose to fight for their country for no financial incentive. Trump furiously denied The Atlantic’s claims against him through a White House spokesman, and also took to Twitter to try and deny his on-the-record insults of McCain.
