Donald Trump attended a 9/11 memorial service in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on Friday, with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden snapped at Ground Zero in New York (Pictures: AP) Donald Trump and Joe Biden have attended 9/11 memorial services in Pennsylvania and New York City to commemorate the anniversary of the 2001 terror attacks. President Trump and his wife Melania flew to Shanksville, Pennsylvania on Friday morning to the site where United Flight 93 smashed into a field, killing 33 passengers and crew, as well as four hijackers. Democratic presidential hopeful Biden – a former US Vice President – attended a service at Ground Zero in lower Manhattan, and exchanged a masked greeting with his successor – current Vice President Mike Pence. Biden was filmed tapping Pence on the shoulder and saying hello, with the politicians’ friendly greeting in marked contrast to the nastiness of the ongoing presidential campaign. President Trump delivered a somber speech, telling the assembled crowd: ‘No matter the threat, no matter the odds, America will always rise up, stand tall and fight back.’ He went on to hail the bravery of those killed on United 93, when passengers famously seized control of the plane, prompting hijackers to plow it into the ground before it could reach its intended target of the US Capitol building in Washington DC. Biden, who will visit Shanksville later on Friday, after Trump has left, was seen comforting two women crying in the crowd in New York City. He said he had taken a day off from campaign messaging ahead of the November 3 presidential election. Biden explained: ‘I’m not gonna make any news today. I’m not gonna talk about anything other than 9/11. Friday’s services were held to mark the 19th anniversary of the attacks in Washington DC, Pennsylvania and New York, pictured, that killed 2,977, (Picture: Getty) ‘We took all our advertising down, it’s a solemn day, and that’s how we’re going to keep it, OK?’ Biden and Pence attended a service at the spot where American Airlines flight 11 and United Airlines flight 75 – both Boeing 767 airliners – were flown into the Twin Towers of the old World Trade Center, destroying both. 2,763 people were murdered in the attack on New York City, with 19 Al-Qaeda hijackers also killed by the impacts. A third attack using an American Airlines Boeing 757 on the Pentagon in Washington DC murdered 184 people, with five terrorists also killed.
