The estate initially declined the Republican National Committee’s request to use the 1984 song, but the RNC went ahead and used the song anyways. ‘We are surprised and dismayed that the RNC would proceed knowing that the Cohen Estate had specifically declined the RNC’s use request, and their rather brazen attempt to politicize and exploit in such an egregious manner “Hallelujah”, one of the most important songs in the Cohen song catalogue,’ Michelle Rice, the Cohen Estate legal representative said. ‘We are exploring our legal options.’ She went on to say that if the RNC requested his song, You Want It Darker, they ‘might have considered approval’ of the specific track. Sony/ATV music publishing released a statement reading: ‘On the eve of the finale of the convention, representatives from the Republican National Committee contacted us regarding obtaining permission for a live performance of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”. Hallelujah was played despite not getting permission (Picture: Matt Kent/Redferns) ‘We declined their request.’ Many musicians have pursued legal action after the RNC and President Donald Trump used their music during rallies, speeches and events. Queen scolded Trump in 2016 after he played We Are the Champions ahead of his victory speech during the final round of Republican primaries. Guitarist Brian May took to the band’s website to say that they were actively pursuing options to stop Trump from playing their songs. Nickelback, Pharrell Williams and Rihanna also followed steps to ensure the President wouldn’t use their songs anymore.
