The post in question featured a link to a Fox News video in which Mr Trump says children are ‘virtually immune’ to the virus (Picture: PA) Facebook has deleted a post by Donald Trump for the first time after it was found to spread misinformation about coronavirus. The post featured a link to a Fox News video in which the president incorrectly claimed children are ‘virtually immune’ to the virus. Several studies suggest, but do not prove, that children are less likely to become infected than adults and more likely to have only mild symptoms. This is not the same as being ‘virtually immune’ to the virus. Facebook said the ‘video includes false claims that a group of people is immune from Covid-19 which is a violation of our policies around harmful Covid misinformation’. Visit our live blog for the latest updates: Coronavirus news live A few hours later, Twitter temporarily blocked the Trump campaign from tweeting from its account until it removed a post with the same video. The company said in a statement late on Wednesday the tweet violated its rules against Covid misinformation. When a tweet breaks its rules, Twitter asks users to remove the tweet in question and bans them from posting anything else until they do. The removal of the post is a change of tack for Facebook, which has previously opted to label – rather than delete – misleading statements. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T1M22S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/08\/06\/06\/31625044-0-image-a-19_1596692442579.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-08-06T06:39:42+0100”,“description”:“Trump pushes claim that children are ‘almost immune’ from coronavirus in a shared clip from his phone interview with Fox & Friends, gets post removed by Facebook.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/08\/06\/8624232472939219363\/480x270_MP4_8624232472939219363.mp4”,“height”:270,“width”:480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A Centres for Disease Control and Prevention study involving 2,500 children published in April found that about one in five infected children were hospitalised compared to one in three adults. The study lacks complete data on all the cases, but it also suggests that many infected children have no symptoms, which could allow them to spread the virus to others. An analysis by the World Health Organization of six million infections between Febuary 24 and July 12 found that the share of children aged 5-14 years was about 4.6%. The Facebook post now redirects to this page after it was deleted by the site (Picture: Facebook) A tweet of the same video was also deleted from Twitter (Picture: Twitter) The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. During a briefing at the White House, Trump repeated his claim that the virus had little impact on children. ‘Children handle it very well,’ he told reporters. ‘If you look at the numbers, in terms of mortality, fatalities … for children under a certain age … their immune systems are very very strong and very powerful. ‘They seem to be able to handle it very well and that’s according to every statistical claim.’ Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
