The president argued that the Twitter account is his personal property (Picture: Getty) Donald Trump has gone to the Supreme Court for permission to ban people from his personal Twitter account after he was found to have violated America’s First Amendment by blocking critics. The Justice Department has asked the Supreme Court to overturn the decision made in New York last year that the daily ‘pronouncements and observations’ Trump makes on his account are ‘overwhelmingly official in nature’. His administration argued on Thursday that the @realdonaldtrump Twitter page – which has over 85,000,000 followers – is the president’s personal property, and that he should be able to block whoever he wants. Acting Solicitor General Jeffrey Wall said in a high court filing: ‘President Trump’s ability to use the features of his personal Twitter account, including the blocking function, are independent of his presidential office.’ The case arose when the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University filed a lawsuit against Trump on behalf of seven individuals who were blocked after criticising his policies. The federal appeals court ruled last year that Trump violated the First Amendment when he blocked critics on Twitter (Picture: Getty Images) The organisation’s executive director, Jameel Jaffer, said: ‘This case stands for a principle that is fundamental to our democracy: government officials can’t suppress speech simply because they disagree with its message.’ The filing comes on the same day a New York Judge ordered Trump to release his tax filings from the past eight years, and his former chief strategist Steve Bannon was arrested and charged with defrauding Trump supporters under the guise of a ‘We Build the Wall’ fundraising scheme. A decision on Trump’s appeal is unlikely to be made before the US presidential election in November. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
