The President’s announcement came after 923 new fatalities were recorded on Tuesday, down considerably since the peak in early May but still the biggest daily toll since June 10. Around two dozen states have seen alarming surges in new infections over the last two weeks as the country passed the grim milestone of three million cases. A growing number of states which initially resisted face masks have also begun issuing orders that residents wear coverings while out in public or in confined spaces, while others backpedal on plans to reopen. The White House’s own virus expert, Dr Anthony Fauci, also broke ranks to acknowledge that the situation in the US is ‘really not good’ and warn that the country is ‘still knee-deep in the first wave’ of the pandemic. Speaking to Times Radio, he said it was ‘a false narrative to take comfort in a lower rate of death’. Don’t get into false complacency.’ Death Rate from Coronavirus is down tenfold! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 8, 2020 However, Trump insisted the US remains in a ‘good place’ and suggested Dr Fauci had ‘said numerous things’ which turned out to be bad advice. He added: ‘We’ve done a good job. I think we are going to be in two, three, four weeks, by the next time we speak, I think we are going to be in very good shape.’ The president again hit out at the ‘Fake News’ media in an earlier tweet in which he repeated the suggestion that the country had seen ‘A Tenfold Decrease In Mortality’. Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (Picture: AFP via Getty) California, Hawaii, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma and Texas shattered their previous daily record highs for new cases on Tuesday. The biggest jumps occurred in Texas and California, the two largest US states, with more than 10,000 each. Texas has seen a huge surge in the number of people testing positive since it started aggressively loosening lockdown restrictions in May. The state is reporting, on average, more than four times as many cases each day as it was a month ago. It surpassed 10,000 new confirmed cases in a single day Tuesday. At least 10 of the 100 other guests are also thought to have developed symptoms. Her daughter says her mother told her she wished they had been more careful. She said: ‘We didn’t take precautions like we should have. We just got totally caught up in the moment.’ In all, Texas has recorded more than 2,670 deaths and more than 200,000 confirmed cases of the virus. While rising case numbers partly reflect more testing, Texas has a positive test rate of 13.5%, more than double the rate from a month ago. Anyone seeing a patient with Covid-19 is required to wear two sets of masks, gowns, gloves, shoe and head coverings, and a face shield. Air is pumped by hand as medical personnel try unsuccessfully to save the life of a patient (Picture: AP) Dr Varon said he has worked more than 100 days with barely a rest and normally sleeps just a few hours a night. When he isn’t seeing patients or trying to obtain more hospital supplies, he does media interviews to encourage people to wear masks and take the virus seriously. He said: ‘People need to see this so they can understand and won’t do stupid things. Every day, we have stuff like this. Every single day.’ Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk. For more stories like this, check our news page.
