This Weak in Politics, Vol. 240 July 2, 2020 This week, all across America, Trump supporters will gather to watch fireworks, while adults will stay home thinking about just how far we’ve fallen as a nation. Truth is, however, we do have much to celebrate. On July 4th, we celebrate our Independence from Great Britain. And hopefully, on November 3rd we will celebrate our Independence from Russia. In the interim, however, Russia continues to bitch slap the American president who is too busy not reading to even notice. This time, America’s humiliation comes from learning through intelligence that Vladimir Putin, a man whom Trump looks at the way Mike Pence (sp?) looks at Trump, has been paying a cash bounty to Taliban-backed fighters who kill American soldiers. In fairness, Trump himself has been known to toss around a bounty™ or two himself, so his indifference was to be expected. https://ift.tt/3dWByts In further defense of the president, the information was passed on through intelligence — and whether by design or happenstance, Trump and intelligence have never been seen in the same room. Trump denies that he was ever briefed on the matter — an argument that would stretch credulity, but credulity snapped like an old rubber band back in November of 2016. The “administration” has had to dance with several excuses for the White House’s indifference to the Russian bounty program, including he wasn’t briefed, it wasn’t verified, it didn’t rise to the level of being viewed by the president (or as Trump puts it, the revelation “didn’t rise to the occasion.”) Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave a shrug of his shoulders and added that Russia acting with bad intent is not newsworthy. This was notable as it marks the first time Pompeo has criticized his own government. The one group that was not critical was elected Republicans, who continue to allow the president to do whatever he likes so long as he continues to nominate very young, very conservative, unqualified judges to lifetime appointments. They are not going to let a little pesky treason stand in the way of that! Here’s a lovely tribute song to the whole situation https://ift.tt/3gsazYt Bottom line is, not only did Trump ignore the intelligence (and Republicans ignored the president’s ignorance), in the ensuing months he (Trump) continued to be Putin’s caddy/ball washer on the international stage. On the subject of Putin, this week a referendum passed in Russia paving the way for the Russian/American president to serve 16 more years. The referendum passed with a whopping 70% of the vote, causing some analysts (loosely defined as “sentient beings”) to question the veracity of the results. Trump, however, didn’t question the veracity of the results for two reasons: 1) he doesn’t know the word “veracity” though he suspects it has something to do with high school sports, and 2) you don’t question the boss. While the results may be difficult to believe, one thing is for certain — Putin is on a winning streak. Electorally, he won the Russian presidency in 2000, 2004, and 2012, and won the American presidency in 2016. #Winning! Enough about Russia. Here in the colonies, the big news is yet again coronavirus. (Wait, will future generations refer to this as the Coronial era?) Now, we don’t claim to be a scientific journal by any stretch, but even to us lay people, one scientific truth is becoming abundantly clear: Somehow, pretending the virus has or will disappear, or that it is a hoax, is not working. We know this, because Mike Pence (sp?) this week “led” our nation’s response to the coronavirus pandemic by urging people to wear masks — merely 2,442,254 cases and 113,875 deaths after the CDC did in April. Well, Pence urged many Americans to wear a mask, but not the president. The president is instead handling this coronavirus pandemic the same way he handled the Russia bounty intelligence — by golfing, tweeting, and racisming. We mean, let’s be honest … while the man is not particularly good at pandemics, he’s a wizard at klandemics. A grand wizard even. Fine. That was gratuitous and uncalled for. We should not have said that about the president, so we will clear the air by saying this, and we truly believe it: Donald Trump does not have a single bone in his racist body. And that’s the way the weak spent the week in a nation where our focus is, rightfully, on 1776, and 50. No, not the year of our independence and the number of states in the republic. 1,776 is the daily number of people who contract coronavirus every 50 minutes in the United States.
