This Weak in Politics, Vol. 242 July 16, 2020 For most of America’s history, great challenges have forged and elevated the presidents who confronted them — Washington with the pressure of setting the standard, Lincoln during the Civil War, Roosevelt during the Great Depression, and Reagan during the Cola Wars. There can be no denying that, today, we are facing challenges on par with those: global pandemic; civil unrest in the streets; 32 million people unemployed; RBG getting hospitalized. To meet the challenge, President Trump did what any great president would have done — defended the confederate flag, fired his campaign manager, took medical advice from a game show host, and accused his opponent of being anti-window. Sure as hell beats thinking about the 3.6 million Americans infected with coronavirus and the 33,000 who have perished. And the president’s approach to this historical killer? Proclaiming that under no circumstance will he allow science to be the arbiter of our children’s safety and signaling his “silent majority” to view mask-wearing as an assault on their manhood (even for the women) and an assault on freedom. Sure, it may kill us all, but our forefathers didn’t die protecting the confederate flag only to have us be forced to wear a mask in the Piggly Wiggly. Oh, and he attacked a 79-year-old, epidemiologist/Medal of Freedom recipient. That’s right, at the (new) height of a pandemic, the administration began an all-out assault on the nation’s top epidemiologist (for those of you who rate such things), deferring instead to one of the nation’s top four Wheel of Fortune hosts. (Aha! You forgot about Rolf Benirshke, didn’t you?) Dr. Anthony Fauci has been the victim of misleading attacks on his track record, his stubbornness, and his inability to be a team player. Truth is, the real reason Fauci is on thin ice is that he has appeared on TV many times during this crisis using the f-word. Facts. Dr. Anthony “F-Bomb” Fauci on his way to work earlier this year Note: If the woman in the previous photo looked familiar to you, there’s a good reason. She was recently featured on the cover of a children’s book aimed at teaching young readers about life during the coronavirus pandemic. Publicly, Dr. Fauci has maintained his calm presence and his cool demeanor — all which the nation (except for the confederate part) seems comforted by. We are told, however, that behind the scenes the attacks are beginning to take their toll, as this photo shows. Ok, we admit it. We actually altered the photo of Dr. Fauci. He does NOT own a pair of pot leaf socks to the best of our knowledge. It isn’t just Fauci the president and his team have been going after — the administration is already redirecting some CDC responsibilities to allies of the president, and the president is continuing in his effort to overhaul the CDC making it more to his liking. The new CDC is already writing new guidelines to fight coronavirus called: “COVID Plan: No Whammies! No Whammies!” If you are wondering why game show hosts like Alex Trebek and Steve Harvey aren’t in Trump’s inner-epidemiological circle, there is good reason: Trebek is Canadian, and Harvey is bla… he’s bl… umm… he’s from Chicago. Career professionals at the CDC, to their credit, did not go off on the president as some love-deprived, power-hungry, dangerous narcissist. His niece, Mary, did that instead. The Trump family, with Mary Trump in the foreground. This picture, taken at the opening of Trump’s Taj Mahal Casino, is notable for a couple of reasons. 1) President Trump looks like he just saw a black person walk into his casino, and 2) Trump’s father, perhaps aroused by the presence of a sheep that is related to him, is apparently trying to hide his erection under his blankie. In campaign news, polling shows former Vice President Joe Biden pulling ahead of Trump nationally 51%-40% in a head-to-head match-up. One caveat: that is basically the same lead President Hilary Clinton had in 2016. The poll also showed that in a hypothetical head-to-head match-up against the coronavirus, the deadly virus would defeat Trump 42%-36%, with 22% undecided. Because of these tanking numbers, Trump fired campaign “manager” Brad Parscale, is returning to briefings at the White House, and is doubling down on 70’s era race-baiting rhetoric like “law and order” and the “silent majority.” We have even been told Trump is planning on resurrecting a modified/Trumpified version of Republicans’ 1970s era slogan, “Whip Inflation Now.” Finally, speaking of disastrous, racist campaigns, Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, III was defeated in his attempt to return to the U.S. Senate. You may recall, Sessions was earned the ire of Trump by recusing himself from the Russia investigation, thus subjecting the president to the machinations of that evil genius, Rod Rosenstein. (Remember him? Man, that seems like 47 scandals ago.) By firing Sessions, Trump was able to bring in current A.G., Bill Barr, which has worked quite well for Trump as Barr was willing to do all the dirty things no one else would do. Sort of the Ron Jeremy of Justice, if you will. (Thanks, for the reference, Ken.) And that’s the way the weak spent the week in a nation where a totally out of control, egomaniacal, isolated, psychopath is calling all the shots and not a single person in this administration is willing to spill the beans. Though there are apparently a couple willing to sell them. If you enjoy reading TWITPOL please seek help.
