Top Republican Mitch McConnell slapped down Donald Trump’s idea to delay the US election (Picture: Getty Images) Top Republicans have reacted angrily to Donald Trump’s suggestion to delay November’s presidential elections over alleged voter fraud. In a rare rebuke, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell – one of the most powerful Republicans in Washington – agreed the November 3 election date was ‘set in stone’. He said: ‘Never in the history of Congress – through wars, depressions and the Civil War – have we ever not had a federally scheduled election on time, and we’ll find a way to do that again this November 3. ‘We’ll cope with whatever the situation is and have the election on Nov. 3 as already scheduled.’ Trump earlier claimed on Twitter, without providing evidence, November’s election would be ‘inaccurate and fraudulent’. ‘With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history,’ he tweeted. ‘It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???’ With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote??? — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 30, 2020 Trump appeared to walk away from his idea to delay the election just hours after floating it, telling reporters: ‘Do I want to see a date change? No, but I don’t want to see a crooked election. This will be the most rigged election in history if that happens.’ He does not have the authority to move the date of the election as any change requires congressional approval. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T1M38S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/07\/31\/06\/31399456-0-image-a-1_1596173780944.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-07-31T06:34:50+0100”,“description”:“He said that it would be ‘very very unfair’”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/07\/31\/5524866778547965267\/480x270_MP4_5524866778547965267.mp4”,“height”:270,“width”:480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A conga line of Republicans condemned the president for even suggesting a delay. Trump ally Senator Lindsay Graham said it was ‘not a good idea’. Senator Chuck Grassley said the US was ‘based on the rule of law’ and ‘one individual’ could not change that, AP reported. Many US states want to make postal voting easier due to the coronavirus pandemic. Biden is ahead of Trump by a significant margin in several swing states, current polls suggest.
