Donald Trump, pictured at the White House on July 15, has suggested delaying the November 2 presidential election after claiming it will be vulnerable to mail-in ballot fraud (Picture: AP) Donald Trump has suggested delaying the US presidential election for the first time in history amid continued poor polling results. The President of the United States tweeted Thursday: ‘With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. ‘It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???’ President Trump’s tweet is the first time a sitting US president has ever called for an upcoming presidential election to be delayed. He has repeatedly made unfounded claims about mail-in voting being vulnerable to voter fraud, and was previously censored by Twitter for doing so. Trump has suggested such ballots can be exploited by illegal immigrants, or even people living abroad, and claims it will be used to unfairly swing the election against him. ABC News reported that Trump does not have the power to delay the election, and would have to go through the US Congress to seek a delay to the hotly-anticipated ballot. Trump called for the election delay as polls continued to show him trailing rival Joe Biden ahead of the November 2 election Presidential historian Michael Beschloss was among those stunned by Trump’s call, and tweeted: ‘Never in American history – not even during the Civil War and World War II – has there been a successful move to “Delay the Election” for President.’ And Chris Stirewalt – political editor for pro-Trump TV network Fox News also condemned the president, calling his tweet a ‘flagrant expression of his current weakness.’ Stirewalt said the delay request was almost certainly due to Trump’s current poor polls and seemingly unlikely chances of being re-elected. Trump made the attack amid mounting support for postal ballots to encourage social distancing during the ongoing coronavirus crisis, which has infected 4.5million Americans and killed over 153,000. Multiple polls show him trailing rival Joe Biden in key battleground states ahead of the November 2 election, amid criticism over Trump’s handling of the coronavirus crisis and subsequent economic chaos. In May, Biden himself predicted that Trump would try to delay the presidential election to boost his chances of holding onto the White House. The president has also faced mounting condemnation over his handling of ongoing racial equality protests across the United States, some of which have sparked riots. Trump tweeted as newly released figures showed a record-breaking 32.9% drop in Gross Domestic Product for the second quarter of 2020, spanning April 1 to June 2020. That figure – the total value of all goods and services produced by the United States economy – is by far the biggest drop since records began in 1947. Before coronavirus hit the United States, Trump repeatedly hailed the strong economy as the crowning achievement of his administration, and has since insisted it will bounce back in the third and fourth quarters of 2020.
