Donald Trump has insisted his handling of the coronavirus crisis has been good – and slated White House immunologist Dr Anthony Fauci, right, for giving contradictory advice (Pictures: EPA/AP) Donald Trump has clashed with the United States top coronavirus doctor Anthony Fauci again and implied he is better equipped to tackle the crisis. Speaking to Fox News outside the White House Tuesday, the President of the United States said: ‘I think we are in a good place. ‘I disagree with him…Dr Fauci said don’t wear masks, now he says wear them.’ Trump – who notoriously suggested injections of disinfectant as a potential Covid-19 treatment – went on to accuse the White House immunologist of giving bad advice on ‘numerous things.’ Earlier this year, Dr Fauci questioned the effectiveness of masks in slowing the spread of Covid-19, but has since changed his view, and said he was trying to avoid a run on the face coverings so that medical staff would have adequate supplies. The president spoke amid a huge surge in coronavirus cases across the United States, with the country experiencing the world’s highest ever one day diagnosis count – 55,000 – last week. But Trump has pointed to falling death daily rates – which are currently down 8% on the same day a fortnight ago – as evidence that the pandemic is under control. He added: ‘So we’ve done a good job. I think we are going to be in two, three, four weeks, by the time we next speak, I think we are going to be in very good shape.’ Last week, Dr Fauci – director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases – said the United States was still ‘knee deep’ in the outbreak. He said rapid reopening measures had sparked surges in states including Texas and Florida, which have seen record increases in the number of residents diagnosed with Covid-19. Meanwhile, Trump has faced criticism after coronavirus cases in Oklahoma hit a one-day high of 858 on Tuesday – far eclipsing the previous daily record of 585 diagnoses. The president held a re-election rally on June 20, where the tightly-packed crowd were not made to wear face masks.
