Donald Trump is planning the biggest July 4 fireworks celebration ever despite the US recording record Covid-19 diagnoses for two days in a row (Pictures: AP) Donald Trump has planned one of the biggest July 4 fireworks displays in American history despite the US seeing record-high Covid-19 diagnoses twice this week. The President of the United States has thanked corporate sponsors for helping bring together the Washington DC display, even though the city’s mayor is against it. Saturday’s display is set to go ahead despite the US recording the single-highest number of coronavirus cases – 51,504 – on Thursday. That edged past the previous record set just 24 hours previously, when 51,174 cases were confirmed across the country, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University. Doctors say the number of hospitalizations is also rising, sparking fears of a shortage of beds – and a possible increase in the number of fatalities in the coming weeks. Trump tweeted about the Independence Day display on Friday, but did not make any reference to wearing masks, social distancing measures – or coronavirus itself. Despite rocketing infections, he insisted the outbreak was easing in the US earlier this week. This is great news, but even better news is that death, and the death rate, is DOWN. Also, younger people, who get better much easier and faster!’ Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser cautioned residents against attending the display, which she cannot prevent because it is being held on federal land. Bowser said: ‘We are giving DC residents the same message about any of their outings for the holiday weekend. Ask yourself, do you need to be there. ‘Ask yourself, can you anticipate or know who all is going to be around you? If you go downtown, do you know if you’ll be able to social distance?’ Trump has been repeatedly criticized for holding large events without asking attendees to socially distance or wear masks. Last month, he held re-election rallies in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and at a packed church in Arizona – despite the second state experiencing a worrying surge in Covid-19 cases. The president also plans to host a crowded the famous Mount Rushmore Memorial in South Dakota Friday night. Earlier this week, one of his most vocal supporters Herman Cain tweeted that masks would not be required at the event, saying: ‘PEOPLE ARE FED UP.’ Cain has since tested positive for coronavirus and is receiving treatment at an Atlanta hospital. So far, the US has seen almost 2.74 coronavirus diagnoses, and 128,740 coronavirus deaths.
