Donald Trump and Joe Biden could be forced to debate in an empty room because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic (Pictures: AP) Donald Trump and Joe Biden’s first presidential debate may be held without a live audience because of the coronavirus outbreak. The president and his election rival will go head to head at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, on September 29, but strict social distancing measures mean the debate may be free of the traditional cheering – and jeering – audience. Bosses at the University’s Health Reserve Campus are still finalizing details, and will make a decision about observers closer to the time, depending on whether the outbreak has slowed down. They say that if an audience is allowed, it will be much smaller than usual, because live observers will be forced to sit at least six feet apart. Both Trump and Biden are known to thrive on the energy of a large crowd, with an empty room – or screens displaying a virtual audience such as those seen at basketball games – potentially making for a more somber and serious debate. The pair had been due to hold their first face-off at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, only for its hosts to cancel over safety fears. Trump is 74 years-old to Biden’s 77, with the men’s ages putting them firmly in the high-risk category should either contract coronavirus. Politico reported that the second presidential debate on October 15 is set to be held at the University of Miami in Florida after the University of Michigan dropped out last month. Details on whether that event will be held before a live audience have yet to be announced. Trump announced last week that the annual Republican National Convention will be held virtually over coronavirus fears. The event had been due to take place in Jacksonville, Florida, between August 24 and 27, with the president said to be excited about making a speech in front of his supporters. Recent polls show Biden holding a comfortable lead over Trump ahead of the November 2 election. The president has faced strong criticism over his handling of the coronavirus outbreak, which has infected close to 4.4million Americans and killed over 150,000. He is also embroiled in ongoing controversy over his decision to send in government police officers to riot-hit US cities, with protests continuing since George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis in May.
