But this new two-part series is ditching satire for a dramatic look at the run-up to Trump’s victory in the 2016 presidential election – and features Brendan Gleeson as you’ve never seen him before. The Irish actor stars as Trump in The Comey Rule, and although we only get a shadowy look at Gleeson’s President Trump in the teaser trailer for the CBS miniseries, the resemblance is rather startling. The 65-year-old – best known for his roles in In Bruges, Braveheart and the Harry Potter films, in which he played Mad Eye Moody – plays Trump in the early months of his presidency, and explores his fractured relationship with former FBI director James Comey (played by Jeff Daniels). The CBS series is based on Comey’s New York Times bestselling book A Higher Loyalty, and examines the FBI’s investigations into Hillary Clinton’s emails and Russian interference in the 2016 election – later the reasons for Comey’s sacking in 2017. And director Billy Ray has claimed that Gleeson initially turned down the controversial role of Trump, over concerns about the attention it would bring. Jeff Daniels plays Comey opposite Gleeson’s Trump (Picture: Showtime) Ray told Vanity Fair: ‘Here’s a guy who’s won plenty of awards. He’s had a great career. He’s sitting in Ireland, bothering nobody. This guy needs controversy like he needs a hole in the head. ‘I mean, there’s just no reason to invite the kind of grief that he’s about to catch. And in fact, he actually turned the part down the first time we offered it to him for exactly that reason.’ However, the star – father to Star Wars actor Domhnall Gleeson – soon changed his mind after a number of unnamed actors passed on the role. And considering Vanity Fair describes Gleeson portraying Trump as ‘vulgar, corrupt, and deeply indebted to the manipulations of Vladimir Putin’, we’re sure the star can expect a rather cross tweet from POTUS in September when the show airs. Gleeson initially turned down the role (Picture: Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images for Entertainment Weekly) The Comey Rule was initially slated to air after the presidential election in November, when Trump will seek four more years in a race against Joe Biden, but Ray publicly objected to the delay. He said: ‘Of course, I wanted this series to air before the 2020 elections. ‘I think our democracy is on the line right now. And I wanted this series to be part of that conversation.’ The US presidential election will be held on 3 November.
