Trump ranks himself the second best US President of all time for black people (Picture: AP/AFP/Reuters) Donald Trump has bragged about doing ‘more for the black community than any president since Abraham Lincoln’, who abolished slavery in 1863. As riots rumble on in cities across America over the death of unarmed and handcuffed George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer, the POTUS has sought to defend his record on helping African Americans. It comes after a bizarre photo op in which a priest and peaceful Black Lives Matter protesters were tear gassed so Trump could walk to a damaged church near the White House and hold up a Bible. In a Tweet yesterday Trump boasted: ‘My Admin has done more for the Black Community than any President since Abraham Lincoln. Passed Opportunity Zones with @SenatorTimScott, guaranteed funding for HBCU’s, School Choice, passed Criminal Justice Reform, lowest Black unemployment, poverty, and crime rates in history… AND THE BEST IS YET TO COME!’ Members of the D.C. He also warned Black Lives Matter protesters that they face ‘the most vicious dogs’ and the ‘most ominous guns’ if they breach the White House fence. As demonstrators gathered outside his Washington DC home, some throwing rocks and tugging at police barricades, Trump was rushed to an underground bunker by Secret Service agents. Trump’s ‘looting and shooting’ slogan was taken from 1967 Miami police Chief Walter Headly, who used the phrase during hearings about crime in the city, sparking outrage from civil rights leaders. Howard University’s professor Clarence Lusane told NPR: ‘He had a long history of bigotry against the black community. The NAACP and other black organisations had for years complained about the treatment of the black community by Miami police. He has denied stoking race riots with his inflammatory language. claiming that the Make America Great Again movement ‘loves the black people’. He admitted he ‘should not have been so cavalier’ as he apologised during a call with the U.S. Black Chamber of Commerce and said he would never ‘take the African American community for granted’. Biden added: ‘I shouldn’t have been such a wise guy. No one should have to vote for any party based on their race or religion or background.’ Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
