The president made the claim in front of thousands of his own supporters at a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he also referred to the virus as ‘kung flu’ in his latest bid to emphasise its origins in China. After boasting that America’s 25 million individuals tested far outstripped other countries, he said: ‘When you do testing to that extent, you’re going to find more people, you’re going to find more cases. So I said to my people: slow the testing down.’ ‘They test, and they test, we got tests that people don’t know what’s going on, we got tests – we got another one over here.’ He referred to testing as a ‘double-edged sword’ because of its effect on case numbers. A White House official told the Reuters news agency that Mr Trump was joking. Mr Trump launched his re-election campaign this week, an unusually early start for a sitting president. He will face Democrat nominee Joe Biden. Many parts of the 19-000 seat rally venue were empty, making attendance numbers look smaller than the heights Mr Trump enjoyed on his first campaign run. Although the daily death toll has remained below 1,000 for the last 10 days, around 20 states mainly in the South and West have seen a rebound in infection rates. Many of the states with newly-resurgent case numbers predominantly voted for Trump. Survey data suggests that people’s risk attitudes towards the virus diverged along voting lines early on during the pandemic. Male Republican voters were less likely to wear face masks than other groups while Republican voters as a whole were more likely to believe their state should ease restrictions faster. Some Trump allies have suggested that cultural or ethnic differences explained the effect the virus has had in different areas. Referring to the disproportionate number of black Covid-1-9 victims, Republican state senator Steve Huffman said earlier this month: ‘Could it just be that African Americans, the colored population, do not wash their hands as well as other groups?’ The president has repeatedly tried to discredit the ‘fake news’ media for concealing what he called his ‘phenomenal job’ of tackling the outbreak.
