Naga Munchetty looks back on her racism row with Donald Trump (Pictures: BBC/AP) Naga Munchetty has insisted she is not a robot while reflecting on her recent racism row with Donald Trump. Back in 2019, the BBC Breakfast presenter was reprimanded after she weighed in on the president’s tweet that female minority Democratic rivals should ‘go back to where they came from’. At the time, she stated: ‘Every time I have been told, as a woman of colour, to go back to where I came from, that was embedded in racism. The star continued: ‘Now, I’m not accusing anyone of anything here, but you know what certain phrases mean. ‘I can imagine lots of people in this country will be feeling absolutely furious that a man in that position feels it’s okay to skirt the lines with using language like that.’ Following an investigation, Naga was found to be in breach of BBC guidelines, however, this ruling was soon overturned by BBC director-general Tony Hall after a public outcry. Naga spoke out in wake of the Black Lives Matter protests (Picture: BBC) And in wake of the Black Lives Matter protests that are happening across the globe following the death of George Floyd, the journalist has looked back on her row with the President. Talking on the Women’s Prize for Fiction Podcast, the 45-year-old spoke about her job as a journalist and how she has been criticised. ‘As far as I’m concerned, I did not offer an opinion, however, I was reflecting on what was said and is obvious,’ she stated. ‘However, I sit on that sofa as a woman, as a person of colour from an ethnic minority, who is not a robot. ‘We are not robots. We are not there to simply blankly read the news.’ Thousands have descended onto the streets following George Floyd’s death (Picture: PA) Naga added: ‘That isn’t our job – we are judging the tone of the morning, we are judging the tone of those who are watching, we are judging what they need to know and informing them neutrally but with insight, as much as we can.’ Turning her attention to the protests, she continued: ‘Just today I was on the phone to a colleague who is bereft at the moment. ‘She is mixed-race and she is bereft about trying to figure out how we are in a situation again where a man has been killed and the colour of his skin cannot be ignored in terms of the circumstances surrounding his death.’ George Floyd, 46, died after a police officer was seen kneeling on his neck during an arrest. Since then, thousands of people have descended onto the streets worldwide with many marching in support of Black Lives Matter. Got a story?
